Societal determinants of environmental consumer activism: a critical inquiry
(Textauszug)
Global nuts and local mangoes: the limits and potential of the UNDP's growing sustainable business initiative in Kenya
"This paper seeks to offer an empirical contribution of the political processes, limits and potential of UN brokered partnerships that seek to deepen or create inclusive and sustainable agricultural supply chains in sub-Saharan Africa. More specifically it appraises the local processes of partnership brokerage, decision-making mechanisms and project implementation within the UNDP's Growing Sustainable Business Initiative (GSB) in Kenya. The paper argues that the lack of bottom-up participation in decision-making mechanisms and the predominantly economic imperatives driving the partnership projects have failed to reach out to the partnerships' intended beneficiaries – Kenyan small producers of nuts and mangoes. Opening up the GSB platform and monitoring the developmental impact of its partnership projects might hold the promise of reconciling sustainable business models with (some) poverty reduction." The private governance of food: equitable exchange or bizarre bazaar?
"In recent years, we have witnessed three parallel and intertwined trends: First, food retail
and processing firms have embraced private standards, usually with some form of third
party certification employed to verify adherence to those standards. Second, firms have
aligned themselves increasingly aligned themselves with, as opposed to fighting off,
environmental, fair trade, and other NGOs. Third, firms have embraced supply chain
management as a strategy for increasing profits and market share. Together, these trends
are part and parcel of the neoliberal blurring of the older liberal distinction between state
and civil society. In this paper I ask what the implications of these changes are from the
vantage point of the three major approaches to ethics: consequentalism, virtue theory, and
rights theory. What are the consequences of these changes for food safety, for suppliers,
for consumers? What virtues (e.g., trust, fairness) are these changes likely to embrace
and what vices may accompany them? Whose rights will be furthered or curtailed by
these changes?" (author's abstract)

Strong sustainable consumption governance – precondition for a degrowth path?
"This paper aims to link two debates and literatures at the cutting edge of sustainable development research and governance: sustainable consumption and degrowth. Interestingly, these literatures have only recently started to exchange and integrate insights, despite their similar interest in the fundamental systemic challenges to sustainable development arising from a political discourse favoring (green) growth and the recognition of the insufficiency of technological solutions. The paper argues that this lack of connection is due to a predominance of perspectives in sustainable consumption research and governance that fail to deliver as promised. These perspectives, which we summarize under the label of "weak consumption" perspectives, focus almost exclusively on questions of efficiency gains. They therefore are not able to address the challenges to sustainable development arising from overconsumption in general or the rebound effect in particular. In contrast, a strong sustainable consumption perspective provides a basis for both, a promising inquiry into the linkages between consumption and sustainable development and fruitful exchange with de-growth. It is based on an inquiry into levels and patterns of consumption and thereby allows the delineation of relevant scientific and political implications for the de-growth debate and literature." The effectiveness of private food governance for sustainability
"This paper aims to evaluate the effectiveness of private food governance in addressing the
environmental challenges facing the global food system, today. Greenhouse gas emissions,
decline of biodiversity, water pollution, pesticide use and the generation of waster are considered the new agrarian questions of this century. Crucially, the governance of such environmental strains is a rapidly emerging issue for private actors, who have become key players in global food governance. Yet, few studies have tried to understand the actual impact of private rulesetting, in general, and retail governance, in particular, in detail. Drawing on global governance literature and organisational theory, this paper evaluates the effectiveness of private food governance institutions for sustainability, in terms of their comprehensiveness, stringency, compliance and coverage. Next to this quite narrow understanding of effectiveness the paper also identifies the broader political and soci-economic influence of private food governance in terms of structural, cognitive and normative effects. The paper illustrates its arguments in two cases, namely GlobalGAP and the Marine Stewardship Council. As such, the paper advances our theoretical knowledge on private rule-setting institutions and contributes empirically to political science research by making available new data on a currently understudied case of private governance." The financial crisis in discourse: banks, financial markets and political responses
"The financial crisis led to an enormous economic downturn as well as dramatic increases in
unemployment, insolvencies and public debt. Simultaneously, it revealed fundamental
weaknesses of the current functioning of financial markets, if not global economic relations as
such. Why, then, has the financial crisis not led to a more fundamental questioning of the
politico‐economic system and broader political change? In this paper, we aim to find an
answer to this question by analyzing the construction of the financial crisis in German public
discourse. We show that this construction is characterized by drama and perplexity, normative
incoherence, and a lack of access for political alternatives. These findings, in turn, provide an
important basis for understanding the political handling of the financial crisis in Germany." [author's abstract]
The financial crisis in discourse: analyzing the framing of banks, financial markets and political responses
"Increasingly, the lack of change in the political organization of the global economy, in general, and financial markets, in particular, as a function the financial crisis has come to the center of attention. Such a lack of change should cause some surprise. After all, the financial crisis led to an enormous economic downturn as well as dramatic increases in unemployment, insolvencies and public debt. Simultaneously, it revealed fundamental weaknesses of the current functioning of financial markets, if not global economic relations as such. Why, then, has the financial crisis not led to real political change? In this paper, we aim to find an answer to this question by analyzing the construction of the financial crisis and its core actors in German public discourse. We show that this construction is characterized by drama and perplexity, normative incoherence, and a lack of access for political alternatives. These findings, in turn, provide an important basis for understanding the political handling of the financial crisis in Germany." (author's abstract)
'In God we trust?': Diskursive Macht religiöser Akteure in der Entwicklungspolitik
