Der Sammelband ist aus der Jahreskonferenz 1998 der Ethiopian Economic Association hervorgegangen und vereint 16 der dort präsentierten Papiere zu unterschiedlichen Aspekten der äthiopischen Wirtschaftsentwicklung. Ghirmatsion analysiert die Bevölkerungsentwicklung, Nega und Nurzu unterziehen die makroökonomische Entwicklung 1991-98 einer Analyse, Demeke befasst sich mit der Herausforderung, die Nahrungsmittelproduktion zu steigern und Ayana untersucht, welche Ergebnisse die wirtschaftliche Liberalisierung im Kaffeesektor gebracht hat. Haile untersucht Natur und Ausmaß der Arbeitslosigkeit, Bediye die Determinanten der Kredittilgung im Industriesektor. Struktur und Fähigkeiten des Finanzsektors vor und nach der Reform ist das Thema von Geda, Walelign klärt über Prinzipien und Praxis der Budgetierung im öffentlichen Haushalt auf. Um den Zusammenhang zwischen Militärausgaben und wirtschaftlicher Entwicklung geht es bei Kibret Taye. Geda/Zerfu zeichnen ein Profil der öffentlichen Auslandsverschuldung, Geda außerdem eines des Außenhandels während Asfaw und Belete die Instabilität der Exporteinnahmen angesichts der gegebenen Exportstruktur analysieren. Die Auswirkungen der Globalisierung auf die äthiopische Ökonomie ist das Thema von Degefe; Zalalem untersucht Direktinvestitionen als Instrument wirtschaftlicher Integration. Geda wiederum präsentiert die Ergebnisse eines Modells, dass externe Schocks und Veränderungen der Industrieländer-Politik auf Afrika simuliert. (DÜI-Sbd)
