This book describes and analyzes the role which co-operative groups can play in the rural development process in Zimbabwe. The author examines the various components that may influence the formation of such co-operative groups and how group effectiveness may be influenced by these components. One hypothesis tested against research in this book is that elected group leaders in present-day Zimbabwe do not yet have the autonomy to make and implement decisions concerning the future of their groups. Data contained in this book was the result of nearly three years of study of two selected groups from Manicaland Province. One, Shingirai, in Mutasa District, was a women-only group, while the other, Kubatana, in Buhera District, was a mixed sex group. Both groups were "supported" by the umbrella Manicaland Development Association (MDA) which had been formed in 1980 by leading politicians and others from the province. (DÜI-Phl)

The aim of this dissertation is to analyse the economic activities of the Rhodesia Cold Storage and Export Company (RESCO) in Southern Rhodesia between 1924 and 1938. The RESCO was a subsidiary firm of the South African based Imperial Cold Storage and Supply Company. Its operations in Southern Rhodesia were varied, ranging from meat packing at Bulawayo, cattle ranching activities which were concentrated at Nuanetsi and the manufacturing of butter and ice. Besides, the subsidiary also engaged in marketing meat products to the domestic, regional as well as the overseas markets. Another important aspect examined in this paper is the continously antagonistic and unsavoury relationship between the RESCO and cattle producers of Southern Rhodesia. (DÜI-Hff)

The main body of information was collected between 1983 and 1985, but data gathering continued into 1987

This paper assesses the role tea marketing has played in the Rhodesian tea industry between 1965 and 1979 when the country was under economic sanctions. The author analyses the way adopted by the tea industry to market its tea and to survive despite the imposition of economic sanctions. Emphasis is put on how South Africa helped the industry to invalidate the effects of the sanctions especially during the first ten years of their imposition. The paper then discusses how various factors miligated against the success of the industry between 1975-79, almost causing its collapse before it was saved by the advent of independence in 1980. The author also discusses very briefly the contribution of labour towards the viability of the tea industry. (DÜI-Hff)
