PurposeIt matters to be aware of the important direct or indirect role of the financial markets in the human development dynamics in a globalizing world. The purpose of this paper is to identify some main inter‐relations in the socio‐economic system. Deterministic technical factors are opposed to individual or political will. Invisible and visible hands of "players" are designing the future. Is fear justified?Design/methodology/approachThis paper uses a systemic approach to describe the impact of the regulation rules through market forces (here the financial markets). But, these forces are not just anonymous; behind hide shareholders, stakeholders, financial funds and institutions, corporate managers, consultants and analysts, employees, retired individuals, politicians, etc. The socio‐economic game is asymmetric and often conflicting.FindingsThe paper tries to explain how the present winners of the game are powerful. The domination effect has its rationale. Applied skills and behaviour of the players are able to contribute to the general equilibrium or unbalance of the social system; but this is never a stable one. Evolution may lead to a paradigm shift or a dangerous clash.Originality/valueThe paper brings together diverse aspects, facts and theories that illustrate the relationship between monetary assets, business activities and human well‐being (both materialistic and intangible). It underlines also the role of policy that has to legitimate the finality of the system.

"In this first comprehensive study of tuberculosis in modern Cuba, Kelly Urban analyzes the medical, social, and governmental responses to the highly contagious disease, particularly as the island was heading into and emerging from the 1959 revolution. Tuberculosis--one of the top three causes of death in Cuba at the beginning of the twentieth century--provides a window onto broad questions of citizens' rights, biomedicine and public health, and political change"--

This is a book about how to manage the processes involved in a construction project towards a sustainable and regenerative endproduct. It covers key project management concepts and links the construction process to the objectives of UN SDGs and beyond zero carbon emissions throughout the whole project life cycle. This introductory textbook is written from a project manager's perspective including considerations of circular economy throughout the construction process focusing on a regenerative or restorative outcome. The book examines the importance of the type and purpose of a building, circularity and de-construction, the site, the client and its organisation, stakeholder considerations, the project organisation, the procurement of consultants and contractors, project performance during design and construction, project hand-over to the client, and the building's operation and maintenance. It also illustrates how to verify the building using existing environmental certifications, how to calculate carbon emissions, and how to deal with used construction materials from a circular economy perspective. International examples of best practice are included throughout, and the book is structured in a way which students will find engaging and easy to follow. This is an ideal textbook for use on construction, architecture, and engineering programmes where the emphasis must urgently be placed on students fostering regenerative construction solutions in their coming professional life.

"Garish churches, gabled slab blocks, neo-historical tenements - this book is about these and other architectural oddities that one would not expect under an authoritarian socialist regime. It is about the committed individuals that rendered them possible in spite of repressive politics and persistent shortage. It is about a very different background of postmodern architecture, far removed from the debates over Robert Venturi, Philip Johnson or Prince Charles-a context in which postmodernism stood not for world-weary irony, but for individualized resistance against a collectivist dictatorship, a yearning for truth and spiritual values, and a discourse on distinctiveness and national identity. Postmodern Architecture in Socialist Poland argues that this new architecture was more than just a symptom of the beginning political and economic transformation. Rather, it was itself an agent of change. The changing style and priorities in architecture, the most public and expensive of the visual arts, contributed to incremental change beneath what otherwise appeared to be a rigid authoritarian regime. The book analyses the dynamics of this change. It shows that to a large extent postmodern architecture was promoted by dedicated people who took advantage of cracks in the system. These included not only architects but also public servants and priests, acting courageously without explicit support by the rulers, despite tight economic circumstances. Their work did more than just tweak the appearance of the built environment, it changed society in late-socialist Poland and continues to do so today. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars in architectural history, postmodernism, and socialist history"--
This book traces the journey of new Muslims as they joined the early Islamic community and articulated their identities within it. It focuses on Muslims of slave origins, who belonged to the society in which they lived but whose slave background rendered them somehow alien. How did these Muslims at the crossroads of insider and outsider find their place in early Islamic society? How did Islamic society itself change to accommodate these new members?
By analysing how these liminal Muslims resolved the tension between belonging and otherness, Conquered Populations in Early Islam reveals the shifting boundaries of the early Islamic community and celebrates the dynamism of Islamic history.
