Popular ideas on modernization and rationalization lead to the expectation that neighbours have only a marginal position in personal circles, in particular if one lives in a city and has a high income or status. This paper inquires into the importance of neighbours in personal networks in the Netherlands. It is studied whether geographical propinquity has consequences for the organization of personal networks and what the differences are between different regions and degrees of urbanization. Sharing group and social capital theory are used to develop hypotheses on the relations between neighbours and on the kind of support they lend to each other. Data result from the study on 'Primary Relationships and Social Support' (PRESOS, 1987, N=906), until now the only national representative data on (neighbour) networks of Dutch citizens. Results show the following: first, and in contradiction to ideas on consequences of modernization, neighbours are a vivid part of personal networks and they are important for many kinds of help. Yet, neighbours usually do not form close relationships with each other, they are rather weakly connected. Second, differences between rural and urban regions are very small and not robust. Third, higher educated do not have less but more contact with their neighbours. Lastly, most important for relations with neighbours is the need for support and the absence of other network members who can provide help.

This article discusses the role of neighbors in the personal networks of people living in the Netherlands. It aims to establish the conditions for the inclusion of neighbors in such a network. Three complementary theoretical perspectives for developing hypotheses are employed: meeting opportunities, sharing groups, and social capital. Arguments are tested using nationally representative data ( N = 902) and multilevel regression models. The results show that all three perspectives contribute to explain the number of neighbor relations in personal networks, although none of the theoretical perspectives is fully confirmed. Interestingly, local facilities such as primary schools and day care facilities, which draw their members not only from the neighborhood but also from a larger local area, influence the likelihood of including neighbors in personal networks: primary schools encourage these relations, while the existence of day care facilities discourages neighboring.

This paper addresses the question "To what extent can job satisfaction be explained as the revenue of social capital?" By conceiving someone's social network as social capital we specify conditions under which social ties do lead to job satisfaction. We inquire into the idea of goal specificity of social capital, which implies that a network with a given structure and content will have different impacts on various aspects of job satisfaction. If the content of the ties and the structure of the network at the job engender material well-being or produce social approval, satisfaction with the corresponding job aspects increases. Data were collected in 1993 using written questionnaires in two Dutch governmental agencies, one with 32 and the other with 44 employees. These workers' networks were charted using nine name-generating questions. Social capital, it turns out, is not an all-purpose good but one that is goal specific, even within a single domain of life such as work. Three effects stand out: First, the structure of the network and the content of the ties do matter. Networks of strategic, work-related ties promote an employee's satisfaction with instrumental aspects of the job, like income, security, and career opportunities. Second, closed networks of identity-based solidarity ties improve an employee's satisfaction with social aspects of the job, like the general social climate at work and cooperation with management and colleagues. Third, a network with a bow–tie structure (i.e., where a focal actor is the link between two or more mutually exclusive cliques) generally has strong negative effects on satisfaction with the social side of the job; although a bow–tie type network of trusting ties does increase satisfaction with the social side. This implies that Krackhardt's hypothesis on the unpleasant feelings produced by bow–tie type networks has to be specified for the content of the ties that constitute such a network. The corona pandemic left its mark not only on public health but also on society at large. Sociological insights about the changes in, for example, inequality, sociability and social resilience are becoming increasingly clear now that the onset of the pandemic is further behind us. In this volume, sociologists and science press from related disciplines shine their light on the challenges of our time. In doing so, they focus on three questions: 1) what do we know about the social consequences of corona?, 2) what do we disagree on as scientists? and 3) what does the pandemic teach us about large-scale challenges in the future? Using the insights from this volume, we illuminate sociological issues and provide direction for the future.

Households and personal networks We investigate the association between household arrangements and social network characteristics by using three structural perspectives: social context, time demands, and social support. Evidence from the Survey on the Social Networks of the
Dutch 2007/2008 (SSND; N = 950) best supports the social support and time demands perspectives. While persons living in households with a partner and/or with children generally hold fewer and less diverse ties to household externals with whom they discuss important personal matters; those
living alone have larger core discussion networks with more different contacts. This suggests that those living alone are not less socially integrated than people who share a household with others.

Despite the scholarly consensus on the importance of civic organizations for the livability of neighborhoods, there are relatively few empirical studies examining to what extent these organizations engage in various forms of political participation to contribute to the quality of the neighborhood. The authors argue that to get a better overview of neighborhood-oriented forms of participation, it is necessary to look beyond those organizations with an explicit focus on the neighborhood and to include newer forms of participation such as coproduction, government-initiated plans that seek to address neighborhood issues through extensive cooperation with organizations. The authors argue that three groups of factors determine organizational participation: resources, engagement, and network position. An empirical analysis of survey data collected in 2007 from 400 organizations in eight neighborhoods in two Dutch cities shows that the impact of resources is virtually absent, whereas concern about the neighborhood and relations to pivotal organizations are positively related to participation.

People with whom we discuss important personal matters – i.e. the core discussion network – are important for providing help and support as well as influencing behaviour. This is the first study that describes and compares the core discussion network of prisoners prior to
incarceration with that of the Dutch population. Differences in their networks have been analysed in terms of network structure, relationship quality and embedded socioeconomic resources. We used unique network data from the Prison Project (n = 1909) and the Survey of the Social Networks of
the Dutch (SSND; n = 394). The results show that compared with people in the general population, prior to incarceration, prisoners have a core discussion network that is similar or - in some respects - even more favourable in terms of structure and relationship quality. However, prisoners
seem to have less embedded socioeconomic resources in their core discussion networks.

erfragt: Beruf identisch mit dem 1989 ausgeübten Beruf; Art der
Vermittlung der Arbeitsstelle.

Arbeitslose wurden gefragt: Einkommensquellen.

Veränderungen der Tätigkeit im Vergleich zur Tätigkeit von 1989
bezüglich Kollegen, Funktion, Aufgaben und Arbeitsaufwand;
Veränderungen der Tätigkeit seit der letzten Befragung; Einschätzung der
persönlichen Arbeitsplatzsicherheit; Einschätzung der Beanspruchung
durch die Tätigkeit; Wichtigkeit ausgewählter Aspekte und Zufriedenheit
mit diesen Aspekten im derzeitigen Beruf; beabsichtigte berufliche
Veränderung und Gründe für diese Absicht; wichtigste
Informationsquellen bei der Arbeitsstellensuche; Beurteilung der

8. Kernnetzwerk: Bekanntheit der Personen untereinander und
Verbundenheit untereinander; Alter und höchster Schulabschluss dieser
Personen.

9. Prognosen: Erwartetes Kennenlernen weiterer Menschen; Art der
zukünftigen Beziehungsveränderungen; größter Wunsch; Erfüllung der
Kontaktprognosen des Befragten vom letzten Jahr.

10. In einer separaten Datei sind die Netzwerkdaten von Personen
enthalten, die als relevante Unterstützer in verschiedenen Lebenslagen
(Beruf und Freizeit) benannt wurden.
