Children have very low levels of response stability on many questions commonly used in political socialization studies, particularly those measuring attitudes. Data from a 3-wave panel survey of 1,000 San Francisco area youngsters, ranging in age from 9 to 15, were used to measure the stability of children's responses to common political socialization questions. The research was conducted from Dec 1968 through May 1969. A table of response change from wave 1 to 3 is given for a question asked. Children have a very low level of stability across 3 intervals in response to questions commonly used in political socialization studies. Possible explanations for this phenomenon are offered. Suggested strategies for future research include: (1) it may be important to discuss "embryonic forms of attitudes" among children, rather than "attitudes"; (2) a "don't know" choice for each question should be included; & (3) open-ended questions should be favored over closed questions. 3 Tables.
