It has been supported by the Charles University Research Centre No. 9 (UNCE/HUM/009) and the Charles University program PROGRES Q09: History – The Key to Understanding the Globalized World. ; The paper is focused on an analysis of British-Canadian constitutional and institutional relations in connexion with the nation-building process, Mackenzie King's nationalist tendencies and Canadian efforts to be partly recognised as an independent state during the Imperial Conference of 1926, which marked a new phase in relations among the Dominions and the mother country. The circumstances strengthened Canada's Prime Minister, Mackenzie King, in his conviction that they had to break free from their obligations arising from common policies, and instead ensure that Ottawa enforce an independent, or at least autonomous, form of foreign policy. Subsequent conflicts of opinion between Canadian Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King and Canadian Governor-General Viscount Byng affected the agenda of inter-Imperial relations regarding ensuring a precise definition of the institutional status of Governors-General. Mackenzie King thought that Governors-General should from then on represent the Crown, but not the London government. This change would give Dominion governments direct access to the King. Previously, Governors-General in the Dominions had been viewed more as "communication intermediaries" between Britain and local representatives rather than direct representatives of the King.

Příspěvek je založen na analýze britsko-kanadských vztahů v souvislosti s uzavřením americko-kanadské Platýzové smlouvy z roku 1923 se zvláštním zřetelem ke konstitucionálním vztahům mezi mateřskou zemí a dominii, jež tvořily vedle imperiální zahraniční a hospodářské politiky jednu z nejvýznamnějších a nejzajímavějších kapitol britských imperiálních dějin ve dvacátých letech 20. století. Po skončení první světové války zastávali někteří zámořští představitelé názor, že dominia jsou rovnoprávné země s Británií, že se již nenachází v subsidiárním postavení a že je pojí společné závazky vůči Koruně a členství v britském impériu. Okolnosti a diskuse, které doprovázely vyjednávání a uzavření tzv. Platýzové smlouvy mezi Spojenými státy americkými a dominiem Kanada se nemalou měrou odrazily v potřebě jasněji vymezit konstitucionální postavení dominií a problematiku sjednávání, signování a ratifikování mezinárodních smluv. ; The contribution is focused on the analysis of the British-Canadian relations in connexion with the Conclusion of the American-Canadian Halibut Treaty of 1923 with special regard to the constitutional relations between the mother country and its Dominions, which along with foreign and economic policy formed one of the most significant and interesting chapters in British imperial history in the 1920s. AÝer the First World War, some overseas representatives maintained a position that the Dominions were now equal countries with Britain and, on top of that, that they were no longer in a subsidiary position and were united by common obligations towards the Crown and their membership in the British Empire. Àe circumstances and discussions that accompanied the negotiation and conclusion of the Halibut Treaty between the United States of America and the Dominion of Canada all were reflected to a large extent in a clearer definition of the constitutional status of the Dominions and the problems of negotiation, conclusion and ratification of international treaties. ; Příspěvek je založen na analýze britsko-kanadských vztahů v souvislosti s uzavřením americko-kanadské Platýzové smlouvy z roku 1923 se zvláštním zřetelem ke konstitucionálním vztahům mezi mateřskou zemí a dominii, jež tvořily vedle imperiální zahraniční a hospodářské politiky jednu z nejvýznamnějších a nejzajímavějších kapitol britských imperiálních dějin ve dvacátých letech 20. století. The study focuses on the problems of British-Dominion relations with a special regard to the share of the Dominions in formation, execution and direction of the imperial foreign policy in the 1920s and at the beginning of the 1930s. In the post war period, it was expected that recognition of a formal independence and a new international status of the British Dominions would be take place. Concurrently with a wider conception of the Dominion autonomy, a more intensive cooperation was realised within the Empire, which gradually led to a bigger interest of the overseas autonomous units in the decision-making process concerning the direction of the imperial foreign policy. The observed problems concentrated on two main fronts, it means the measure of consultations among the mother country and the Dominions and individual foreign policy questions, crisis, incidents and events that, in reality, contributed to a discussion concerning the share of overseas autonomous units in the formation and execution of the Imperial foreign policy from the side of the British Foreign Office. Balfour Declaration adoption, increasing the importance of the Dominions, began the period that was significant with pacification of debates concerning execution of the imperial foreign policy and during which it was necessary to wait for next few years for this status legislative approval till the adoption of the Statute ofWestminster in December 1931.

The First World War represented the biggest challenge and a test of cohesion for the individual parts of the Empire. Newly, the dominions were to reach full recognition as autonomous nations of the imperial community. Participation of the Dominions at the Paris Peace Conference and the issues discussed there influenced the status of the Dominions not only to their mother country, but also to the wider world. All the Dominions, except for Newfoundland, found themselves among members of the new international organisation – the League of Nations. In addition, Dominion delegates also signed the Treaty of Versailles, which the overseas leaders considered a formal recognition of their formal independence on the part of the British. However, in contrast to the expectations of the Dominion representatives, a symbolic recognition of their new status did not take place and, therefore, the world continued to regard them as an integral part of the British Empire, i.e. that the British still represented them in many aspects on the outside. The course of the conference, however, did confirm that it was not possible to view the Dominions as "ordinary" colonies or dependent territories anymore. The First World War strengthened the general trend heading towards a broader understanding of autonomy and to a more intense cooperation within the Empire.

The formation of the first dominions by linking the until-then Self-governing Colonies together raised the question of what the position of the new Dominions to their mother country and the other parts of the Empire was. Before the outbreak of the First World War, matters related to the Dominion status were discussed at several Colonial, from 1907 Imperial Conferences; however, neither British nor Dominion politicians managed to reach an agreement or a complex solution. In fact, only partial solutions were adopted. At the turn of the 19th and 20th century, the British Government began to pursue defence matters intensively. A lot of foreign-policy issues, and in particular fear of German naval armaments, had a profound influence on the debate; indeed, this was the case to the extent that the significance of the second influential imperial institution, i.e. the Imperial Defence Committee, rose. Even though the system of imperial conferences, that served as a forum where crucial questions dealing with imperial, foreign, defence and economic policies were decided, was institutionalised and firmly "anchored" in the imperial structure, it had to compete with the powerful Imperial Defence Committee. ; 61 ; 72

Cílem studie je analýza politiky východního bloku vůči Chile mezi léty 1973 a 1980 na příkladu Československa. Dokumenty z českých archivů a dobová literatura demonstrují její komplexnost a proměnlivost. Ač Československo přerušilo v září 1973 se Santiagem diplomatické styky, i nadále usilovalo o udržení svých pozic v zemi. Vedle hospodářského významu byla dalším důvodem možnost legalizace agentů československých tajných služeb. Chilský převrat byl reflektován v československé společnosti způsobem, že občan dostával o vzdálené zemi mimořádné množství informací (např. výstavy, literatura, film a hudba). Jejich charakter nepochybně přispěl k vytvoření řady stereotypů ve vnímání Allendeho a Pinochetovy vlády, které stejně jako v dalších postkomunistických státech přežívají do dnešní doby. ; The aim of this paper is to analyze the policy of the Eastern Bloc towards Chile from 1973 to 1980 on the example of Czechoslovakia. The documents from Czech archives and the literature from that period show its complexity as well as its transformation. Although Czechoslovakia suspended diplomatic relations with Chile in September 1973, it sought to maintain its positions in the country. Apart from the economic importance, another reason was the possible legalization Czechoslovak intelligence agents. The Chilean coup d'état was well reflected in the Czechoslovak society, as the people received an unprecedented amount of information about this distant country (e.g.exhibitions, literature, films and music). Its character, without doubt, contributed to numerous stereotypes in the perception of Allende's and Pinochet's governments which have survived in several post-communist countries to this very day. ; Cílem studie je analýza politiky východního bloku vůči Chile mezi léty 1973 a 1980 na příkladu Československa. Článek se zabývá tzv. soudy cti, které byly v Sovětském svazu ustaveny pro druhé světové válce a měly sloužit k disciplinaci vědy a byrokracie. Cílem bylo rozšířit stranickou disciplínu a pojetí "stranickosti" především mezi vědeckou komunitou. Zavádění soudů cti tak odráželo celkovou snahu poválečné stalinské politiky zavést a obnovit stranická pravidla jako nezbytný základ pro jednání a chování akademiků a byrokratů. Zvláště ve vědě kampaň související se soudy cti odstartovala masivní pokus sovětského režimu podřídit si sovětskou vědu. Tento proces kulminoval v celé řadě vědeckých kongresů a stranickými orgány vedených debat, během nichž sovětská věda ztratila poslední zbytky své nezávislosti. ; This study discusses courts of honour, established in the USSR after WW2, as a bureaucratic mechanism to discipline scientific and high administrative bodies. Courts of honour were designed to extend party discipline and the notion of "partiinost'" in to the scientific community. Therefore a general pattern of the post‑war Stalinist coercive policy was mirrored in order to establish party rules as necessary grounds for academicians and bureaucrats. In science particularly, the campaign of courts of honour triggered a massive attempt of the Soviet regime to interfere and to subjugate Soviet science. This process culminated in a series of scientific congresses and party‑ led disputes after which Soviet science lost last remnants of its independence. ; Článek se zabývá tzv. soudy cti, které byly v Sovětském svazu ustaveny pro druhé světové válce a měly sloužit k disciplinaci vědy a byrokracie. Tato studie je analýzou německo‑italských vztahů v období před druhou světovou válkou. Sleduje jejich diplomatické vztahy od uzavření tzv. římských protokolů v roce 1934 přes podepsání OsyBerlín‑Řím (1936) k anšlusu Rakouska v roce 1938, aby analyzovala složité postavení Vídně v těchtodramatických letech. Současně odhaluje, nakolik se Dollfussovo a Schuschniggovo Rakousko stalo mocenskou hříčkou v rukou Německa a Itálie a jak byl Benito Mussolini postupně ochotnější vyměnit své úzké vazby k Vídni za spojenectví s Berlínem a přesunout svůj zájem ze středoevropské k středomořské politice. Studie se současně zabývá významným detailem z italsko‑německých vztahů, a to příjezdem říšského kancléře Adolfa Hitlera do Říma v květnu 1938 a reflexí postojů jak fašistických elit, tak vatikánských špiček k jeho osobě. Analyzuje, jaké vztahy mezi ním a Svatým otcem panovaly a vysvětluje, proč nedošlo v Římě ke schůzce se Svatým otcem Piem XI. a jaký postoj papež při této příležitosti zaujal. ; This study presents an analysis of German-Italian relations in the time before World War II. It traces their diplomatic relations following the conclusion of the so-called Rome Protocols of 1934 via signing the treaty on the Berlin-Rome Axis (1936) towards the occupation of Austria in 1938 to analyze the difficult position of Vienna during those dramatic years. At the same time, it reveals to what extent the Austria of Dollfuss and Schuschnigg became political putty in the hands of Germany and Italy, and how Benito Mussolini was getting more and more willing to exchange his close links with Vienna for an alliance with Berlin, and thus shift his interest from Central-European politics towards the Mediterranean. The study also deals with one significant detail in Italian-German relations, namely with the arrival of Adolf Hitler, Chancellor of the German Reich, in Rome in May 1938, and with a reflection on fascist elites› attitudes as well as those of the Vatican towards his person. It also examines what the relations between him and the Holy Father were, and explains why he failed to meet Pope Pius XI in Rome, and what stand the Pope took on that occasion. ; This study presents an analysis of German-Italian relations in the time before World War II. Předložená studie si klade za cíl představit myšlení o antikomunistických filmech, které vznikly ve Spojených státech na počátku studené války. Přibližně čtyřicet celovečerních hraných snímků, označovaných zpravidla jako antikomunistický cyklus, postupně analyzovali historici studené války, politologové i novináři. Pokoušeli se zasadit sledované filmy do kontextu a vysledovat v nich stopy soudobé společnosti. Součástí této studie je přehledné shrnutí převažujících argumentů a zmínění sporných bodů dosavadního výzkumu. Výsledkem je návrh vlastního členění antikomunistického cyklu, které akcentuje krom tradičních metodologických zdrojů rovněž nástroje nové filmové historie či formálních přístupů. ; The presented study aims to introduce thinking about anti-communist movies, which were produced in the United States at the beginning of the Cold War. Approximately forty feature movies, usually known as the anti-communist cycle, were gradually analyzed by historians of the Cold War, political scientists or journalists. They attempted to put these movies in context and explore traces of contemporary society in them. Part of this study is a clear summary of prevailing arguments and references to disputable points of the current research. The result is a proposal of a new categorization of the anti-communist cycle, which emphasizes traditional methodological sources and tools of the new film history or formal approaches as well. ; Předložená studie si klade za cíl představit myšlení o antikomunistických filmech, které vznikly ve Spojených státech na počátku studené války. Přibližně čtyřicet celovečerních hraných snímků, označovaných zpravidla jako antikomunistický cyklus, postupně analyzovali historici studené války, politologové i novináři. Pokoušeli se zasadit sledované filmy do kontextu a vysledovat v nich stopy soudobé společnosti. Součástí této studie je přehledné shrnutí převažujících argumentů a zmínění sporných bodů dosavadního výzkumu. Výsledkem je návrh vlastního členění antikomunistického cyklu, které akcentuje krom tradičních metodologických zdrojů rovněž nástroje nové filmové historie či formálních přístupů.

Tato studie analyzuje pokus Spojených států amerických svrhnout režim Fidela Castra na Kubě v dubnu roku 1961. Důraz je kladen převážně na roli Ústřední zpravodajské služby (CIA) v této epizodě a důvody, které Bílý dům vedly k tomu, že otevřeně nepodpořil vylodění kubánských exulantských sil na Playa Girón, což nakonec rozhodlo o neúspěchu celé akce. Nejdříve se zabývá genezí úsilí CIA o svrhnutí kubánské vlády za prezidenta Eisenhowera, zrodem této myšlenky, rýsováním konkrétních kroků a transformací původní infiltrace na rozsáhlou obojživelnou vojenskou invazi. Další část se blíže zaobírá obdobím prezidentství Johna F. Kennedyho a dvěma konkrétními plány — Operací Trinidad a Operací Zapata —, které navrhovali zástupci CIA jako reálnou možnost k odstranění komunistické hrozby na západní polokouli. Závěrečná část je věnována shrnutí poznatků, které stály za úplným selháním plánovačů z americké administrativy. ; This study analyzes the U.S. attempt to overthrow the regime of Fidel Castro in Cuba in April 1961.The focus is mainly on the role of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in this episode and the reasons that led the White House that openly did not support invasion of Cuban exile forces in Playa Giron, causing failure of the event. This study deals first of all with the genesis of the CIA effort to overthrow the Cuban government under President Eisenhower, the birth of the idea, detail description of the concrete steps and transformation of the initial infiltration of a large military amphibious invasion. Another part deals with the period specified presidency of John F. Kennedy and the two specific plans — Trinidad Operation and Zapata Operation — CIA representatives suggested that, as a real possibility to eliminate the threat of communism in the Western Hemisphere. Tématem této studie je analýza mocenského střetu Velké Británie a Ruska o vliv ve strategické oblasti Střední Asie v sedmdesátých letech 19. století. Hlavním cílem textu je předložit čtenáři komplexní a prameny podložený výklad příčin druhé britsko‑ afghánské války a dějů, které tento proces provázely. Obsahuje analýzu vzájemné korespondence všech hlavních zúčastněných stran, Afghánistánu, Ruska a Velké Británie. Hlavní důraz je kladen na poslední měsíce před konečným rozhodnutím vlády Britské Indie o vstupu do konfliktu. Nezanedbatelný prostor je pak věnován také vnitřní situaci v Afghánistánu a složitosti pozice, ve které se země, ohrožena tlakem velmocí na svých hranicích, ocitla. ; This study deals with power struggle between Great Britain and Russia over strategically important region of Central Asia in 70s of 19th century. The main objective of whole paper is to present complex explanation of causes of Second Anglo‑Afghan War and also to show simultaneous events which accompanied this process. It contains analysis of mutual correspondence among all main participants of this event: Great Britain, Afghanistan and Russia. The biggest part of study is dedicated to the last month before outbreak of the conflict. It would be almost impossible to understand the causes without insight to the inner political situation in Afghanistan and without analysis of difficult situation in which this country was forced to be by pressure of two imperial powers on its borders. These problems are part of the last section of the article.

The study deals with the establishment and development of the Left‑ wing terrorist groups in the first years of their existence in 1968 — 1974. The beginnings of terrorism are put in context of the social situation in Italy in the end of 1960s (the formation of the extra‑ parliamentary opposition and the situation in the tertiary education) and of the political history of the post‑war Italy (the relations of the Christian Democracy and the Communist Party of Italy). The study also deals with the characteristics of the most important terrorist groups: the Groups of Partisan Action of the editor Giangiacomo Feltrinelli, the Workers' Power, the Continuous Struggle, the October 22 Group, and also the Group of the Apartment and the Political Metropolitan Collective, whose members formed the Red Brigades. These groups are characterized by their position in the student‑workers' movement, ideological or organizational specifics, particular actions and their demise or transformation in the end of the defined period. ; Studie se zabývá vznikem a vývojem levicových teroristických skupin v prvních letech jejich existence mezi léty 1968 a 1974. Počátky terorismu jsou uvedeny do kontextu společenské situace v Itálii na konci šedesátých let (vznik mimoparlamentní opozice a situace v terciárním vzdělávání) i do politický dějin poválečné Itálie (vztahy Křesťanské demokracie a Komunistické strany Itálie). Radikalizaci násilných hnutí rovněž ovlivnily bombové útoky extrémně pravicového původu a strach z možného neofašistického převratu. Studie se dále zabývá charakteristikou a nejvýznamnějších teroristických skupin, jimiž byly Skupiny partyzánské akce milánského nakladatele Giangiacoma Feltrinelliho, Dělnická síla, Nepřetržitý boj, Skupina 22. října, a dále Skupina z bytu a Politický metropolitní kolektiv, jejichž členové zformovali Rudé brigády. Tyto skupiny jsou charakterizovány svým postavením ve studentsko‑ dělnickém hnutí, ideologickými nebo organizačními specifiky, konkrétními akcemi i svým zánikem či transformací na konci vymezeného období. ; Studie se zabývá vznikem a vývojem levicových teroristických skupin v prvních letech jejich existence mezi léty 1968 a 1974. Počátky terorismu jsou uvedeny do kontextu společenské situace v Itálii na konci šedesátých let (vznik mimoparlamentní opozice a situace v terciárním vzdělávání) i do politický dějin poválečné Itálie (vztahy Křesťanské demokracie a Komunistické strany Itálie). Radikalizaci násilných hnutí rovněž ovlivnily bombové útoky extrémně pravicového původu a strach z možného neofašistického převratu. Studie se dále zabývá charakteristikou a nejvýznamnějších teroristických skupin, jimiž byly Skupiny partyzánské akce milánského nakladatele Giangiacoma Feltrinelliho, Dělnická síla, Nepřetržitý boj, Skupina 22. října, a dále Skupina z bytu a Politický metropolitní kolektiv, jejichž členové zformovali Rudé brigády. Tyto skupiny jsou charakterizovány svým postavením ve studentsko -dělnickém hnutí, ideologickými nebo organizačními specifiky, konkrétními akcemi i svým zánikem či transformací na konci vymezeného období. ; The study deals with the establishment and development of the Left‑ wing terrorist groups in the first years of their existence in 1968 — 1974. The beginnings of terrorism are put in context of the social situation in Italy in the end of 1960s (the formation of the extra‑ parliamentary opposition and the situation in the tertiary education) and of the political history of the post‑war Italy (the relations of the Christian Democracy and the Communist Party of Italy). The study also deals with the characteristics of the most important terrorist groups: the Groups of Partisan Action of the editor Giangiacomo Feltrinelli, the Workers' Power, the Continuous Struggle, the October 22 Group, and also the Group of the Apartment and the Political Metropolitan Collective, whose members formed the Red Brigades. These groups are characterized by their position in the student‑workers' movement, ideological or organizational specifics, particular actions and their demise or transformation in the end of the defined period. ; Studie se zabývá vznikem a vývojem levicových teroristických skupin v prvních letech jejich existence mezi léty 1968 a 1974. Počátky terorismu jsou uvedeny do kontextu společenské situace v Itálii na konci šedesátých let (vznik mimoparlamentní opozice a situace v terciárním vzdělávání) i do politický dějin poválečné Itálie (vztahy Křesťanské demokracie a Komunistické strany Itálie). Radikalizaci násilných hnutí rovněž ovlivnily bombové útoky extrémně pravicového původu a strach z možného neofašistického převratu.
