The numbers & backgrounds of women candidates in the 1987 general election in GB are documented. Although the number of women standing for election is increasing, this is not reflected in an equivalent increase in the number of women elected to the House of Commons. Indeed, given the effort that has gone into encouraging women to run for Parliament, the actual achievement is fairly modest, if not disappointing. It is suggested that the political parties could take a lead in changing the ethos of their parties by encouraging more women to believe that they have a chance of political success. 1 Table.
