Dieser Band fragt nach dem Begriff «Transfer» und verweist damit auf die breiteste Bedeutung des Wortes: angefangen von der mittelalterlichen «Peregrinatio» – im konkreten geographischen Sinne – über den Dialog von Kulturen bis hin zur Darstellung verdeckter Erscheinungsformen in der Intertextualität. Der Begriff «Transfer» leitet sich von dem lateinischen Wort «transferre» ab und bedeutet wortwörtlich «hinüberbringen». Der Duden erklärt Transfer mit dem Wort «Übertragung». Diese Definition wird in heuristischer Absicht zum Ausgangspunkt genommen, um den Gebrauch des Begriffes in Bereichen der Geistes-und Sozialwissenschaften zu topographieren
