Peaceful rise and the limits of Chinese exceptionalism
In: Revista Brasileira de Política Internacional, Band 57, Heft spe, S. 210-224
ISSN: 0034-7329
Throughout the last thirty years of opening to the world Beijing has stressed that its rise will be peaceful and that, from a strategic point of view, China is exceptional. There are many challenges facing Beijing's response to the US rebalancing to the Asia-Pacific, but we consider that the ones with greater impact are, in point of fact, of a domestic nature and constitute limits to Chinese exceptionalism.

ISSN: 1645-9199
This essay has the goal of reflecting upon the debate that has taken place in China on the issues of human rights & liberal democracy, twenty years since the 4th of June massacre in Tiananmen Square. We will analyze the legacy of Tiananmen & the liveliness of the internal discussion concerning the political as well as economical options of Beijing and, in particular, "Charter 08," a document that was the outcome of a concerted effort by a varied group of Chinese citizens. A theme that is even more pressing by the multiple analyses that point towards a truly multipolar 21st Century. Adapted from the source document.

In: Relações internacionais: R:I, Heft 18, S. 71-82
ISSN: 1645-9199
The issue of religious freedom is included in one of the greatest challenges faced by Beijing: human rights. In this article we will analyze China's approach towards international human rights' documents as well as its domestic perspective characterized by the reinforcement of sovereignty & rights of citizens & the manipulation of Law. In China, religion is a phenomenon that the government tries to control & repress in many ways. We have chosen to look at Catholicism because this is a religion that poses special challenges to Beijing & shows us how the human spirit is able to survive even in the most adverse conditions. As tres tradicoes e os direitos humanos
In: Relações internacionais: R:I, Heft 16, S. 159-169
ISSN: 1645-9199
This article aims at understanding the role of human rights in theories of IR. We will use three fundamental concepts, namely system, society & community, which are associated with three traditions of thought recognized by Martin Wight & also developed by Hedley Bull, as well as the methodological pluralism of the English School. We will pay special attention to the question of humanitarian interventions, which clearly show the dilemma between order & justice at an international level. The methodological pluralism of the English School reveals itself as a useful tool to understand how human rights are more than the mere adjustment of divergent interests, they are a community element lodged in a societal structure. This structure is fundamentally pluralist, in which humanitarian interventions are exceptions to non-intervention. Adapted from the source document.
