The Cordillera del Condor in the Ecuadorian Amazon has been analyzed frequently in the literature of extractivism in Latin America, due to the current mining pressure on this territory. Mining is, however, the most recent in a long history of territorial transformations in the region. The production of territory in the Cordillera del Condor is the result of a complex historical accumulation of events, motivated by the political economy of the country that has transformed the people and its land. By studying the main events of state deterritorialization, this article examines multiple socio-spatial relations that occurred in the Cordillera del Condor. This article identifies three main events of state deterritorialization: (1) colonization and evangelization, (2) the Ecuador-Peru war and (3) large-scale mining. The analysis illustrates how territory is constantly integrated into the economic and political rationality of the nation-state and discusses these transformations in line with the institutionalization of new forms of organization, legibility, commodification of nature and subjectification of people. In contrast, the study also illustrates how people inhabiting this space counteract state deterritorialization by deploying the same strategies as the state; reinforcing reterritorialization in their own terms. Abstract
How could we conceptualize path development taking place in regions dominated by extracting industries and subsistence economies? The article expands existing Evolutionary Economic Geography theory by focussing on extractive economies in a peripheral region that has, thus far, barely been covered. It challenges existing conceptualizations by highlighting a tin producing island in Indonesia. The article introduces the concept of path marginalization and its reinforcing mechanisms that explain the dynamics between large and artisanal mining activities. It examines how the mining path is reproduced by the interaction between multiple forms of labour organization that are normally unaccounted for.

An analysis of five lawsuits against the infringement of the rights to participation illustrates that effective compliance with free prior and informed consultation and popular consultation on extractive projects in Ecuador is compromised by state institutional fragility. While suits on the rights to participation have served as strategies to halt extractive projects that lack prior consultation, extractive activities continue to present great risks to territorial defense and the good-living agenda.Un análisis de cinco demandas contra la violación del derecho a la participación ilustra que el cumplimiento efectivo de la consulta previa, libre e informada y la consulta popular sobre proyectos extractivos en Ecuador se ha visto comprometido por la fragilidad institucional del Estado. Si bien las demandas en torno a los derechos de participación han servido como estrategias para detener los proyectos extractivos que carecen de consulta previa, las actividades extractivas siguen presentando grandes riesgos para la defensa territorial y la agenda del buen vivir.

En el marco de la Cátedra François Houtart 2018, invitamos al catedrático Juan José Tamayo a reflexionar sobre el rol de la religión dentro del análisis de género y los derechos humanos. La entrevista se desarrolla mediante un diálogo abierto entre Tamayo y las dos investigadoras, partiendo desde cómo el catedrático conceptualiza el feminismo y ha llegado a los estudios feministas, para luego abordar la construcción de las masculinidades, tanto aquellas liberadas así como las "masculinidades sagradas", llegando a analizar la relación entre teología y patriarcado, así como los vínculos entre teología de la liberación y feminismo.

El regreso de un Gobierno neoliberal a Ecuador desde 2017 se ha caracterizado por políticas de austeridad diseñadas para reducir la deuda estatal, a través de recortes a los programas sociales y ambientales, la privatización de las instituciones estatales y de los bienes comunes, la promoción de concesiones mineras y la corporativización de la producción alimentaria. En este artículo, examinamos los procesos organizativos que han surgido o se han fortalecido para defender y promover formas alternativas de gobernar la crisis en el contexto de la pandemia: 1) las movilizaciones antiextractivistas que han resistido el avance de las empresas mineras en la región del Chocó Andino y 2) las organizaciones agroecológicas que han promovido la distribución de productos alimenticios campesinos en múltiples localidades de los Andes. Destacamos el trabajo solidario que entra en esta (re)articulación de distintas formas de antiausteridad y reflexionamos sobre las maneras en que la organización descentralizada no está aislada de las luchas antineoliberales presentes en los movimientos de masas.
