The genocide in Guatemala -- the Latin American country having suffered the highest levels of political violence -- is rooted in the views of a movement that surfaced in June 1954. The way in which the enemy was constructed, the lawful legitimation of terror, the notion of God & the homeland, & the development of a nationalistic discourse, as well as a certain reading of the country's role in the Cold War chessboard are all threads that weaved more than four decades of Guatemalan history. The author intends to recreate the rationalities based on which terror could prevail in Guatemala for many years, particularly, between 1981-83, when the coil of violence attained a height only comparable to some of the darkest passages of mankind history. This work combines the reconstruction of historical sequences, & an inquiry in sources where counter-revolutionary discourses & understandings of some of the major questions for contemporary Guatemala are condensed. 50 References.
