Managing migration promises to be one of the most difficult challenges of the twenty-first century. It will be even more difficult for south European countries, from which emigration has levelled off and to which immigration has become a significant economic issue. Southern Europe is close to other regions where the pressure to emigrate is intense: these regions have a high level of unemployment, above the European Union average, and a large informal sector, often 15–25 per cent of their economies as a whole. This book analyses the southern European migration case using an economic approach. It combines a theoretical and an empirical approach on the fundamental migration issues - the decision to migrate, effects on the country of departure and country of destination, and the effectiveness of policies in managing migration. It also explores the transformation due to migration of southern European countries in the 1980s and 1990s

CARIM-East is co-financed by the European University Institute and the European Union. ; The objective of this critical and methodological survey is economic research on migration issues among European and more generally among Anglo-Saxon scholars and to focus on the themes which could be usefully expanded upon in analyses of migration from and to the CIS countries. The survey covers in a very unbalanced way the three main migration research areas: the migration choice, which attempt to answer the question: why people move; the effects of immigration in the country of destination and its implication for migration policies and the effect of emigration for the country of origin the most challenging and least developed of these three. For all areas the main economic approaches and the variables use, the methodoly and the main results are reported. More attention is devoted to the research field which seems most relevant for the CIS countries and the methodological focus is meaning to make the text as understandable as possible to all social scientists, not only to a small circle of econometric addicted. ; CARIM-East: Creating an Observatory of Migration East of Europe

Euro-Mediterranean Consortium for Applied Research on International Migration (CARIM) ; National and international migration laws determine the legal or illegal status of a migrant. For any given legislation the number of illegal migrants depends on the social-political and economic conditions of the sending countries and on the organizations which favour frontier transit, but also on push-pull forces in the host countries.

Defence date: 15 September 1982 ; Supervisor: Jean Paul Fitoussi ; First made available online 3 June 2015. ; This study is an attempt to analyze labor conflicts in France, Italy, and the United Kingdom since World War II. More precisely it will focalize on a particular expression of labor conflicts, namely, strikes, which are defined by Hicks as an "abstension from work, usually planned, by a considerable number of workers." This definition includes two elements, the group factor and the organizational factor, that distinguish! strikes from -other forms of work conflicts such as lateness, registered or unregistered sickness, or absenteeism. In fact, these two elements are always present during a strike and contrast with the individuality and the individual willingness which are present in other forms of conflict usually grouped under the heading of "unorganized conflict".

AbstractThis article contributes to the understanding of the westward migration of Eastern European women, by comparing Moldovan and Ukrainian women in Italy – the most popular destination for both groups – where they are mainly employed as domestic workers and home carers. Focusing on the differences in their trajectories in this labour sector, we discuss the significance of their age at emigration and their role within their families of origin. These have an impact not only on their mobility patterns, but also on their choices of employment and general socio‐cultural integration in the host country.
