Longtemps chasse gardée des anthropologues, la culture est devenue le terrain de prédilection des chercheurs en sciences humaines et des consultants en management. Dans l'abondante littérature, on distingue les auteurs qui conçoivent la culture d'entreprise comme un sous-ensemble de mythes et de rites, tourné vers l'intérieur, tandis que d'autres perçoivent l'entreprise comme étant une culture et parlent d'identité ou d'image tournée vers l'extérieur. Les dirigeants mettent l'accent sur une « culture d'entreprise en action », fruit d'une combinatoire quasi-infinie d'éléments liés à son histoire, à ses activités, à ses métiers, à ses technologies, à ses produits et à services, à ses valeurs, à la personnalité de ses dirigeants… Éléments qui se traduisent dans les comportements individuels et collectifs au travail. Face au paradoxe du changement, la « gestion par la culture » peut servir de levier pour créer un cercle vertueux conduisant de l'engagement du personnel à la performance de l'entreprise. Mais on ne peut sans doute vraiment parler de la culture d'entreprise que de l'intérieur de celle-ci. Or, une communauté sereine et sûre d'elle refuse l'investigation, s'y dérobe ou au contraire l'ignore. La culture est donc d'autant plus visible que l'entreprise est en péril, condamnée à disparaître ou à s'adapter aux évolutions de son environnement. Sinon elle est aussi présente et invisible que l'air que l'on respire.

"How were space and movement in Roman cities affected by economic life? What can the study of Roman urban landscapes tell us about the nature of the Roman economy? These are the central questions addressed in this volume. While there exist many studies of Roman urban space and of the Roman economy, rarely have the two topics been investigated together in a sustained fashion. In this volume, an international team of archaeologists and historians focuses explicitly on the economics of space and mobility in Roman imperial cities, in both Italy and the provinces, east and west. Employing many kinds of material and written evidence and a wide range of methodologies, the contributors cast new light both on well-known and less-explored sites. The development of historical geographical information systems (HGIS) and other methods from the digital humanities have revolutionised historical research on cultural landscapes. Additionally, the opening up of increasingly diverse collections of source material, often incomplete and difficult to interpret, has led to methodologically innovative experiments. One of today's major challenges, however, concerns the concepts and tools to be deployed for mapping processes of transformation—that is, interpreting and imagining the relational complexity of urban and rural landscapes, both in space and in time, at micro- and macro-scale.
