In this article, the author tries to estimate the number of Cham Muslims in Kampuchea between 1975 and 1979 in order to find out the actual number of these Muslims killed by the Pol Pot regime. According to him, all Cambodian population statistics, of whatever period, include a large measure of hypothesis, assumption, extrapolation and pure guesswork and they may not be adequate for the type of calculations undertaken by either Ben Kiernen (see this journal vol. 20, no. 4, 1988) or by the author. After a brief look at Cambodia's geographic and historical background, the author explores the rise and fall of party politics after 1945, royal socialist dictatorship under Prince Norodom Sihanouk, background of the coup in March 1970 that overthrew Sihanouk, invasion of eastern Cambodia by U.S. and South Vietnamese forces in 1970, "Agreement ending the war and restoring peace in Vietnam" of January 1973, American bombings of Cambodia between 1969 and 1973, establishment of Democratic Kampuchea (DK) in April 1975, causes of the DK aberration, violence against people, background of the Vietnamese intervention in Cambodia, founding of the People's Republic of Kampuchea (PRK), economic, political and social changes in the PRK, the international diplomatic campaign against the PRK, formation of the Coalition Government of Democratic Kampuchea (CGJK), prospects for ending the Cambodian conflict among other issues.
