Japanese Society under Stress

Japan's core postwar social institutions including the family and the firm have come under enormous strain over the past two decades. This article contends that this has generated distinctively Japanese manifestations of psychological pathologies, including school refusal, retreat from society (hikikomori), and sexless couples.
