In this article, a foundation is formulated for an ethic of professional care, in which pity and honour play an important role. The authors argue that sincere pity is crucial in the relationship between those who are in need of care and those who provide care, as this capacity and readiness to be moved by the mere presence of the elderly allows care providers and care recipients to meet as equals, thereby providing a focus for the care. This situation generates an opportunity to respect and honour the care recipient. It does not involve 'honouring' the social contributions of those who are in need of care; it involves respect for the fact that they are people, just as the care provider is a person. The authors conclude that the combination of pity for and the recognition of those who are very old and in need of care would allow for a more humane caring relationship. The practise of being moved and the practise of honour give rise to an integral political-ethical approach to care within which to chart a professional ethic of care.

The article starts with a brief sketch of the current state of care ethics in the Dutch-speaking Low Countries. It examines more closely the authors' approach to empirical research and its underlying argument, and sketches a theoretical development in care ethics that they deem promising. An oscillating movement is needed between empirical work and theory development, committing both to each other. The article concludes with some remarks on the need in care ethics for multisided international debates, the empirical grounding of normative claims and the radicalisation of care ethics, loyal to its critical insights and dedicated to its transformational aim.

Below the surface of everyday care (Part II): Working with the underwater screen in the analysis of research on interaction between lvb youth and their caregivers
In our qualitative research project we look at the everyday interaction between young people with a mild intellectual disability and their caregivers, and we are interested in the institutional impact on the everyday dealings. We have developed an analysis tool that helps identify these institutional influences. In addition, we have used the research methodology Institutional Ethnography. This tool also offers opportunities for other areas of research, because it sensitizes the researchers for the ruling relations that shape the everyday interaction between people. In Part 1 of this article (KWALON 2015, 3), we describe the development of our underwater screen. In this article (Part 2), we discuss the operation of the instrument.
