Les (futures) mères ne se sentent pas nécessairement comblé·es à l'arrivée d'un enfant. Toutes ne s'en estiment pas pour autant troublées ou malades. Qu'est-ce qui amène certaines à souffrir de ne pas vivre la naissance de leur enfant comme un « heureux événement » ? En quoi faut-il croire pour en venir à « se faire soigner » ? Qui faut-il être pour chercher, au prix d'un important travail émotionnel, à devenir une « bonne » mère, aimante et épanouie ? Cet article analyse l'expérience de femmes qui, incertaines quant à leurs affects et leurs capacités maternelles, ont vécu leur parentalité comme empêchée et s'en sont remises à des professionnel·les de santé pour guérir leur « mal de mère ». Il repose sur l'observation de l'activité d'un dispositif de psychiatrie périnatale d'un grand centre hospitalier francilien et sur des entretiens conduits auprès de dix femmes suivies pour une « dépression » au cours de leur grossesse ou après leur accouchement. Ensemble, ces matériaux permettent d'explorer l'une des formes du « désempêchement parental » : le recours volontaire au traitement médico-psychologique. Adoptant le modèle séquentiel interactionniste, l'article propose d'analyser la dépression périnatale comme une carrière de sortie de la déviance émotionnelle et examine les conditions sociales qui rendent possibles sa réalisation.

Since the turn of the millennium, a new series of preventative reforms have decisively oriented French perinatal policy toward the improved management of pregnancy, childbirth, and neonatal care. At the same time, the increased visibility of the diagnostic category "postpartum depression" has contributed to the framing of childbirth as a critical moment in which mothers are exposed to potential mental disorders. Interpreted as the mark of a process inscribed in the very nature of the female psyche, the suffering of mothers now calls for specific modalities of intervention to preserve attachments and, thus, protect children. Based on an ethnographic fieldwork conducted within various institutions charged with maternal and child health (maternal and child health centers, obstetrics, and child psychiatry units), this thesis examines the re-compositions at work in the management of risks around birth. It analyzes the conditions of the emergence of maternal subjectivity as a medical problem, as well as the professional dynamics created by the extensive medicalization of procreative work and the specificities of perinatal support for motherhood, understood here as a work of the familial institution that is rooted in a policy of voluntary self-transformation, where happiness is a promise. This idea serves mostly as a basis for professional evaluations of parents' ability. However, it does not only prescribe behaviors and implement norms; it has also transformed the way people consider their own family attachments, and adjust individually to new ethical definitions of selves. Based on two complementary ethnographic field studies – one looking at the administrative management of adoption and the other at medical care provision for maternal mental health – this article shows how discourses and practices about parentality serve a policy of self-reform. This article therefore questions how politics of control and regulation that are deployed in the privacy of the family sphere act on an ethical level by inviting subjects to reform themselves for their own good and for the good of others.
