Reviews the key issues still debated by traditionalist & revisionist historians concerning Truman's decision to drop the atomic bomb on Japan. Both interpretations are assessed against new scholarship & new evidence, & an overview is provided of recent literature. Recent attempts to establish a middle-ground position are also examined that offer a welcome remedy to the oversimplified & rigid polarization that has characterized much of the heated debate since the fiftieth anniversary of the Enola Gay.
