Includes abstract. ; Includes bibliographical references. ; "The Role of PMCs (Private Military Companies) in Counter-insurgency Combat in Afghanistan (2001 to 2010)" aims to identify the primary combat roles which PMCs played while in support of U.S. forces during the counterinsurgency campaign in Afghanistan from 2001-2010. It first provides background on a number of issues, including U.S. legal and policy themes regarding PMCs, their previous use in combat situations while supporting U.S. foreign policy goals, and the insurgency and counterinsurgency campaign in Afghanistan.

An analysis of Rousseau's cultural and artistic ideas, as taken from the famous Letter to d'Alembert on the Theater. The relation between art and society is examined in keeping with Rousseau's political thought, and contrasts are drawn with the present Western system of democracy.

During the 19th century, and particularly the early years following the French Revolution, many theorists sought to completely redefine how government functioned, in hopes of bringing about a lasting new change to society. Even within this context, it is hard to imagine a more radical proposal for the functioning of government than Rousseau's Social Contract. The idea of a government with complete authority over all matters of society, yet consistently 'checked' through the power of the 'general will', and yearly assemblies comprised of every citizen in society, is one theory that has not had much influence on Western democracies. In stark contrast to this, was the version of government put forth by John Locke, which while agreeing with Rousseau concerning the dangers of the 'state of nature', or an un-governed population, presented what has appeared to be the template for Western democracies today. A form of government not based on absolute power, but instead on a series of 'standing laws', specifically designed to counter this very thing. This essay investigates these two opposing viewpoints, proposed by Rousseau and Locke in The Social Contract, and the Second Treatise of Government. Abstract: The Universal Child Allowance (AUH) is an Argentine cash transfer programme that conditions payment to parents on the fulfilment of health and education conditions for their children. While the impact of the AUH on education is well known, its effects on health have been less explored. This paper assesses the direct effect of the programme on children attending routine medical exams and receiving scheduled vaccinations, the health conditions of the programme, along with indirect health-related outcomes to explore the wider potential effects on child health. Using microdata from the Argentine Social Debt Survey (EDSA), a quasi-experimental design is implemented to determine the average treatment effect on AUH recipients. The AUH is found to have no effect on the behaviours on which it is conditioned or on dental visits, but it does increase food security. The paper discusses the implications of these findings for the design and implementation of programme conditionalities. ; Resumen: La Asignación Universal por Hijo (AUH) es una transferencia monetaria argentina que condiciona el pago al cumplimiento de condicionalidades en salud y educación de los niños. Mientras que el impacto de la AUH en la educación es bien conocido, los de salud han sido menos explorados. El objetivo del documento es evaluar el efecto directo del programa sobre la realización de exámenes médicos y la vacunación, junto con resultados indirectos relacionados con la salud para explorar los efectos más amplios de la AUH. Utilizando microdatos de la Encuesta de Deuda Social Argentina (EDSA), se implementó un diseño cuasiexperimental para determinar el efecto del tratamiento promedio de la AUH. La AUH no tiene efecto sobre los comportamientos en los que está condicionada ni sobre las visitas odontológicas, pero aumenta la seguridad alimentaria. El documento discute las implicaciones de estos resultados para el diseño y la implementación de las condicionalidades del programa.

As interprofessional education (IPE) continues to grow as part of social work programs, it is important to evaluate how best to engage students in understanding this material and explore possible barriers. With this in mind, researchers conducted qualitative interviews and focus groups to explore perceptions of three cohorts of social work students (n=29) participating in short-term interprofessional practicum experiences. Perceived benefits included improvements in communication and client care. The study also uncovered various barriers with implementing IPE-focused practicums such as time, scheduling and role uncertainty. Students shared the impact their experience had on knowledge and perceptions of the social work role in interprofessional collaboration. Even so, students were able to observe important elements of interprofessional practice from these relatively short practicums, indicating they may be a viable option for programs looking to expose students to real world interprofessional experience.
