Attention is drawn to the problem of brown racism, conditions behind its development, & ramifications in the modern world. Brown racism refers to prejudices held by lighter-complexion nonwhite groups -- eg, Mestizos, Chinese, Filipinos, South Asians -- toward black individuals of African ancestry. It is argued that brown racism is an outgrowth of white racism & the hierarchy of color valuation introduced into the non-Western world through the spread of European imperialism. The historical development of brown racism is traced from its initial manifestations, under colonialism, in geographically localized systems of color stratification, to its later manifestations, during the postcolonial era, in a globalized system of racial stratification. After discussing the myth of solidarity among Third World peoples of color against colonialism, focus shifts to conditions that conduced to global manifestation of brown racism, which is explained in terms of several interrelated processes: the economic & political dominace of white Western societies; the increasing postcolonial hegemony of white Western culture throughout the world; & the social-psychological processes of marginalization that cause brown groups who are attracted to Westernization to internalize white Western color valuations. It is argued that brown racism, by supporting & reinforcing the principle of white racism, helps to sustain the very system that is the source of prejudice against browns. 39 References. AA

▪ Abstract Despite its economic and cultural centrality, sport is a relatively neglected and undertheorized area of sociological research. In this review, we examine sports' articulation with stratification issues, especially race, class, and gender. In addition, we look at how the media and processes of globalization have affected sports. We suggest that sports and cultural sociologists need to attend more closely to how leisure products and practices are produced and distributed and how they intersect with educational, political, and cultural institutions. We propose the work of Bourdieu and the new institutionalism to undergird future research.
