This study examines Asian Pacific Americans in the political realm, taking into consideration globalization factors, or "nondomestic political experiences" that have & will continue to influence both the interests & the way APAs conduct themselves politically. The author illustrates the effects on the development of Asian America, beginning with historical background of global factors, & moving on to transnationalism, foreign policy, & international relations topics. It is concluded that Asian Americans will be flexible in their political agendas, as long as there is a willingness to curtail themselves from choosing a single identity (global vs local), thus making a conscious effort to weigh each political circumstance individually. 40 References. The 1996 political fund-raising scandal that involved Asian Americans is situated in the broader context of Asian American political & social culture. During the scandal investigation, many stereotypical portrayals of Asian Americans were voiced. When Asian Americans protested against these, their complaints were largely ignored or dismissed. This shows that formidable discrimination against minorities still exists in US society, with Asian American confronting both racism & nativism. Their mainstream political participation also seems hampered by low voter registration & turnout within the Asian American base. A concentration of activism at the local & community levels at this point could counteract the notion of foreignness & lead to enhanced mainstream participation. Pitfalls of this indigenous-based strategy are discussed. M. Pflum
