AbstractThis article is a theory-building exercise, which focusses on Baradian agential realism to build a framework of key concepts and their interrelationships to show how and why this perspective matters to social work. It makes a statement about the relevance of agential realism, in the writings of Karen Barad and other feminist post-humanist thinkers, to rethink fundamental concepts, which are embedded in social work discourse, especially those humanist notions that relate to agency, subjectivity and reflection. It charts how agential realism can become foundational for social work knowledge. The article is intended both as an introduction to the thought of Barad and as a mapping of current agential realist scholarly trajectories. It guides the reader through the conceptual terrain of agential realist thought by explicating the key concepts of intra-action, entanglement, diffraction and agential cuts. In order to furnish an accessible engagement with Baradian theory, the article marshals case studies and references, drawing on ethnographic and qualitative research, which relate to social work. It concludes by showing how agential realism can provide a rich ontological framework for social work and highlights how it disrupts some of our long-held cherished beliefs about what it means to do social work.

This article argues that the politics of the 'right to difference' and celebration of diversity in social work is a malign tendency that is symptomatic of the malaise of postmodernism and other fashionable trends in human rights discourse. It is suggested that a normative concept of human rights as worked through postmodern preoccupations with difference and diversity is a morally bankrupt perspective. The fixation of the 'right to difference' in social work runs parallel with neoliberalism with its celebration of diversity. The article offers a set of conceptual devices for rethinking social work ethics through the writings of Alain Badiou. His subtractive ontology of truth is presented as an essentialist alternative to the relativist discourses of difference. If social work is to recover a progressive stance, we must reinstall the concepts of sameness and equality. Therefore, social work should be 'indifferent to differences' by transcending the politics of difference.

• Summary: This article develops a means of evaluating service user participation in social care by modelling from a social network analysis framework. • Findings: The three sections of the article cover: i) an overview of the literature identifying the main agendas and influences of practical and theoretical models; ii) mapping the meanings and the mechanisms of interpretation of participation in social care; iii) a positive proposal of a network analytic model for evaluating the degrees of participation in social care agencies for monitoring and evaluation. The conclusion raises some criticisms of the ways social care research has engaged in too general discussions of participation such that they cannot be operationalized. Some observations about the politics of `representation' and `faith' in calls for participation are also raised. • Applications : A positive proposal of a network analytic model for evaluating the degrees of service user participation in social care agencies for monitoring and accountability is developed. The value of social network analysis is outlined by its emphasis on relationships between actors, as distinct from an emphasis on the attributes of individual and groups of actors. To this end a new model of participation for social care derived from network analysis is developed.
