Argues that American policy decisions were driven by two sets of ideas. The first set was political and concerned the relationships between stability and the number of powerful actors in the international system; the second was military and concerned the exigencies of deterring invasion. Explores the struggle between these ideas in the Truman and Eisenhower administrations. (Abstract amended)

Asks whether nuclear weapons have fundamentally altered the conduct of international relations. Argues that while they did not alter the structure of the international system per se, the widespread deployment of these weapons led to nuclear deterrence, a system-wide condition that does constitute a particular kind of structural change. We discuss the various approaches to identification and quantitative measurement of linguistic diversity. Through the examination of theoretical underpinnings of diversity indices and the empirical measurement of diversity, we analyze how the linguistic differences alter economic behavior of various individuals and groups. We then turn to the impact of linguistic diversity on economic and social outcomes, such as economic development, growth, and quality of the institutions on regional and country level.

The idea of a monetary union became the central theme of Roy Jenkins' EC presidency. But Britain and West Germany failed to support his proposals for national interest reasons. An intergovernmentalist view of the EC suggests that a Commission proposal will succeed only if no coalition of member states can improve their interests through multilateral negotiations. (SJK)

We discuss the development of fundamentally new theoretical ideas stated by V. L. Makarov in his article "The calculus of institutions". Some of them have already been implemented for different applied issues. Other ideas have a more debatable nature and require further development and testing on empirical data. In this paper, we pay the main attention to the institutional context, as well as to the formulation and analysis of decision-making procedures under coalition formation surroundings.
