"This book explores dementia-related aggression, violence, and homicide through a detailed analysis of "gray mist killings." The term gray mist killing refers to intimate partner homicides (IPHs) committed by spouses/partners suffering from dementia, homicides of dementia sufferers committed by their caregiving spouses/partners or other family members, and IPHs attributable to the complications of caring for a co-resident family member suffering from dementia. Killings by people with dementia raise questions about the role of biological, psychological, and sociological forces. This book therefore encourages discussions around the relative weighting of these interrelated forces, and why the criminal justice system and the courts have a hard time handling these killings. It also adds to our understanding of the social responses to people with dementia, the orchestration of services, the nature of caring, and the interaction between sufferers and those familial, community, and state actors that provide support and care. The vividly detailed case studies (from the US, UK and Australia) uniquely inform criminological debates about violence, homicide, and the social responses to these complex phenomena. They are organized around the apparent motives for the killing, such as mercy, theft, prior intimate partner violence, mental illness, and exhaustion. The social responses of families, communities, and state actors are examined and contextualized against what researchers and dementia specialists suggest are promising or best practices for intervention. Apparent triggers or circumstantial precipitants for the killings invite discussion of signals, risks, and preventive interventions. Examines marginalization of rural women, the violence they experience, and inadequacy of law enforcement response; policy options. Factors include physical isolation, socio-cultural isolation, and isolation from potentially supportive institutions.

A discussion of the history of theories of domestic violence, its policing, & the inattention to rural women's issues is offered, followed by empirical data on domestic among women in a rural community, in the Appalachian region of eastern KY. Data collected via 50 focused interviews of battery victims (N = 25 ), police (N = 15), court officers & lawyers (N = 2), shelter employees (N = 5), & social service workers (N = 2), & observations of police enforcement & court proceedings regarding domestic violence, lead to the conclusion that 3 forms of isolation -- physical, sociocultural, & institutional -- serve as impediments to rural battered women. Low phone subscription rates & long travel distances are responsible for slow police response times, & create limited avenues for resistance to abuse. Limited or low-paying jobs & rigid gender roles contribute to women's inability to take proactive measures against an abuser, exacerbated by severely limited institutional support, eg, child & health care & weak or ineffective social services, particularly the police. Several suggestions are offered, focusing primarily on building greater social (nonfamilial) networks & increasing the quality of jobs & social services for rural women. 37 References. J. MacDowell

A sample of 1,166 divorce cases are used to compare domestic violence & policing in Lane County, OR, before women acquired the vote (1853-1912) & after (1913-1960). Reasons for granting divorce fell into four main categories: violence, cruelty, adultery, & desertion. Findings reveal an overwhelmingly disproportionate amount of male (M) violence in both time periods. Levels of M violence appear to be similar in both periods, rising slightly in the later period, especially after WWII. Police reports, proceedings of municipal government, & press reports reveal that police intervention is minimal & the arrest of wife batterers virtually nonexistent. These findings lead to a critical assessment of the possible effects of OR women acquiring the vote in 1912. Given the continuing levels of passively policed M violence, it is difficult to argue that the vote was simply a source of liberation for women. Rather, it is concluded that suffrage rights are a complex phenomenon that reflect the dialectical relationship between law & patriarchy. 8 Graphs, 18 References. Modified AA
