Abstract
This special issue follows our conference, which was held in October 2021 and attended by beer historians and sociologists from the U.S., Europe and Australia. By taking beer as a lens to approach questions of knowledge transfer and circulation, we seek to refine our historical understanding of the global entanglements of the beer industry. This is all the more important as to-date the majority of historical beer studies have obscured transnational connections by solely focusing on the nation-state or smaller regional units.

Sowohl der Aufstieg der christlichen Rechten in den USA als auch der 11. September 2001 und seine Folgen haben erneut gezeigt, dass Religion und Politik keine Dichotomien darstellen, sondern vielfach miteinander verflochten sind. Das für die Erklärung dieses Sachverhaltes eminent wichtige Konzept der "Zivilreligion" ist aber bislang hauptsächlich in den USA diskutiert worden und gerade von HistorikerInnen (sträflich) vernachlässigt worden. Wir plädieren im Folgenden für eine "offenere" Definition von Zivilreligion sowie für eine intensivere Nutzung des Konzepts, um Phänomene des Religiösen im Politischen zu erklären sowie Politik-, Kultur- und Kirchengeschichte stärker miteinander zu vernetzen.

The second issue of the yearbook History of Intellectual Culture (HIC) dedicates a thematic section to modes of publication. This volume addresses recent advances in publication studies and stresses the cultural formation of knowledge. By exploring and analyzing layers of presenting, sharing, and circulating knowledge, we invite readers to critically engage with questions of media uses and publishing practices and structures, both historically and in our contemporary digital age. The articles in this volume attest to the great variety of publication modes and perspectives, from the potential and limits of digitizing newspapers such as the New York Times to questions of positionality in building and using Wikipedia, from translation policies and female participation to the genre of university histories. ; The second issue of the yearbook History of Intellectual Culture (HIC) dedicates a thematic section to modes of publication. The theme of the first issue of the yearbook HIC deals with "Participatory Knowledge". It will target the various ways knowledge is rooted in society through the participation of individuals and groups. Topics may include different kinds of knowledge harnessed within or through communities, modes of producing, circulating, and recording knowledge content.

"God bless the United States of America": In den USA ist das Religiöse in der Politik allgegenwärtig - während der Präsidentschaftswahlen oder bei wichtigen Reden des Präsidenten zur Aussenpolitik wird regelmäi︢g Gott erwähnt. Aus europäischer Sicht wirkt diese religiöse Aufladung der politischen Botschaft meist befremdlich. Die enge Verbindung von Religion und Politik, die sogenannte Zivilreligion, nimmt dieser Band für das 20. Jahrhundert in den Blick. Der Fokus liegt hierbei auf Ritualen, etwa den Wahlkämpfen und patriotischen Feiertagen, auf Kriegen wie dem Ersten und Zweiten Weltkrieg oder dem Vietnamkrieg sowie auf ethnischen und religiösen Gruppen, z.B. den Afro-Amerikanern, Latino-Amerikanern und Evangelikalen
