; The attempt to surrender to a world, in which religion or ethnicity no longer serve as criteria for social exclusion, may well remain wishful thinking. Ideologies of Anti-Semitism and National Socialism, which this thesis deals with in detail, showed humanity the limits of peaceful coexistence. Rooted in a political-racist worldview, the Second World War thus, triggered hitherto unknown dimensions of violence and destruction. The manipulative power of National Socialism lastly culminated in the Holocaust and Anti-Semitism Hitlers second weapon- was used to drag the gullible man into the abyss. After 1945, the Austrian population - involved in this mass extermination as well - became entangled in a labyrinth of myths and half-truths instead of facing its own unvarnished past. The delay in coming to terms with the past, as well as the careful maintenance of victimhood, prevented Austrian from having to admit his mistakes until the so-called Waldheim affair. This may contribute to the fact that Anti-Semitism as promoted by Hitler, or to phrase it differently, the hatred against Jews, never completely disappeared in Austria but still serves as a social selection criteria today. Thus, the question "whether man has learned nothing from his mistakes" has lost none of its relevance.
; God must be on holiday! From an equal to an out casted person. Nazi-Germany and the Jews. From: Mag.phil. Manfred Weizer The saying "Have the courage to use your mind" which characterizes the period of Enlightenment constitutes the underlying ethos of this thesis. The concept of freedom of thought as an outcome of the Enlightenment changed the social, political and religious life in Europe permanently. Democracy as the political aspect of this concept had the potential to threaten the establishment and at the religious level, the Roman-Catholic Church perceived freedom of thought as a direct attack on the everlasting truth of the Bible. The system of the National Socialism used to rely on violence and power. Thus any intellectual interference was perceived as an irremissible act of hostility. In Judaism on the contrary education is not only deeply rooted in the tradition but inseparably linked to the religion itself. Therefore, the thesis tries to elaborate the different aspects of these diametrically opposed concepts by focusing on the dialogue between a dying soldier and Simon the Jew. The revelatory aspect of this dialogue leads to the conclusion that every human being owns an inherent fundamental understanding of the good-bad dichotomy. No matter how much moral and ethics are influenced by religion or other ideologies, thoughts of the Enlightenment are deeply enshrined in the soul of a human being. Hence the concept of freedom of thought is the most precious gift from God granted to humans upon the expulsion from Paradise. Consequently, it just needs to be applied! ; eingereicht von Mag. phil. The opinions of Justice Antonin Scalia: the caustic conservative
In: Teaching texts in law and politics v. 13
Judicial opinions written by justices of the United States Supreme Court are readily available, yet few Americans will ever examine the full substance of a Court opinion. Students, particularly undergraduate students with no real expertise (or interest) in the law, can find reading opinions an overwhelming and laborious process. The opinions of Justice Scalia are a different matter. Scalia is often sarcastic, smug, and self-assured. He does not hesitate to take his colleagues to task when he feels they are wrong and does not mind stooping to ridicule and personal attack when it serves his point. In short, whether a reader agrees or disagrees with the points that Scalia seeks to make through these opinions, they are not boring. The layperson as well as the student of government, political science, and law will find the words of Justice Scalia well worth reading. Teachers will find these opinions useful for stimulating class discussions at every level
Reflections on the Life and Legacy of Donald C. Stone
In: Public works management & policy: a journal for the American Public Works Association, Band 1, Heft 1, S. 10-18
ISSN: 1552-7549
Donald C. Stone, the founder of the American Public Works Association, died in 1995 at the age of 92. Professor Stone's life was a deliberate mix of public administration theory and public service practice. He is best known for his contributions to the implementation of the Marshall Plan, the organization of the executive office of the President of the United States, and the establishment of action-oriented professional associations serving a global society. This article is a reflection on the life and times of Donald Stone. It is also a call for historians to critically assess the impact of Stone and his colleagues on public works and public administration history, theory, and practice.
