In describing the changing status system of Indonesia, Wertheim sees its development in four stages: the system in the old native society; the rise of a new status system based on race; the decay of the colonial status system in the twentieth century; the reversal and continuity brought by war and revolution.

Using variables previously operationalized at other systems levels, an attempt is made to construct a scheme applicable to the analysis of internat'l relations. The variables diff'iation, articulation, & relative centrality are examined along 4 subdimensions of internat'l relations: diplomacy, trade, internat'l org's, & military alliances. Guttman scaling techniques & simple matrix analysis are employed. Relationships between the variables are explored & several hyp's are suggested: ie, that if a nation is highly diff'iated internally it will tend to be highly diff'iated externally; that if a nation is highly diff'iated it will he highly articulated & more relatively central; & that such a nation will tend to articulate with nations at a similar level of diff'iation.
