"The Oxford Handbook of Sport and Society features leading international scholars' assessments of scholarly inquiry about sport and society. Divided into six sections, chapters consider dominant issues within key areas, approaches (theory and method) featured in inquiry, and debates needing resolution. Part I: Society and Values considers matters of character, ideology, power, politics, policy, nationalism, diplomacy, militarism, law, ethics, and religion. Part II: Enterprise and Capital considers globalization, spectacle, mega-events, Olympism, corruption, impacts on cities, communities, and the environment, and the press of leadership cultures, economic imperatives, and marketing. In this editorial essay, Editor-in-Chief Lawrence Wenner reflects on his six-year tenure editing the International Review for the Sociology of Sport and the sociology of sport as a scholarly field of play. Thanks are given to the many in the sociology of sport community who have supported the IRSS and contributed to its success. Consideration then turns to the imprimatur of the IRSS and a series of identity struggles evident in the scholarly community. Using the "framing of the naming" of the IRSS, the essay poses that the IRSS is "more than" each of the constituent parts making up the journal's title. In considering how the IRSS is "more than international," arguments are advanced that most socio-cultural studies of sport tend to focus on local, regional, and national sporting experiences and that the IRSS might be better characterized as "multinational" or "multi-vocal" in its orientation. In considering how the IRSS is "more than a review," arguments are advanced that the IRSS has always gone beyond featuring critical articles, a chief technical characteristic marking publications as reviews. In considering how the IRSS is "more than sociology," arguments are advanced that the socio-cultural study of sport has always necessarily reached beyond sociology in engaging a host of disciplines. Related consideration is given to the current status of socio-cultural inquiry about sport, sociology, the sport sciences, and management. In considering how the IRSS is "more than sport," arguments are advanced about the how the socio-cultural study of sport has always had boundaries that blur with the study of physical activity that engages fitness, health, and recreation. Finally, the essay closes with consideration of physical cultural studies and poses that it is deficient as an alternative characterization of the scholarly community.

On the 50th anniversary of the ISSA and IRSS, Lawrence A Wenner, Editor-in-Chief of the IRSS and a key foundational scholar of media and sport, considers how the study of media in the sociology of sport is "unavoidable" as media is central to how sport is framed, understood, enacted, and transacted. The early reluctance to study mediated sport is traced to disciplinary challenges in both physical education and communication studies. These challenges were overcome by the rise of British cultural studies and concerns over agency in the study of "money and power" and "framing and identities" as central to inquiry. Key challenges for the study of media and sport are fueled by the need to go beyond textual analysis, to recognize the "dirtiness" of sport narratives, and interrogate the dynamic of inherently commodified logics. Posing the lasting power of the "mediasport interpellation" as a form of address anchored in gender, fan, and consumer identities, it is argued that new media will encounter embedded cultural logics about sport as obstacles to change.

This article provides an editorial introduction to the first of two special issues of American Behavioral Scientist on "Sport, Communication, and the Culture of Consumption." This first issue focuses on "Evolving and Emerging Markets" and brings together American, Canadian, British, and Australian scholars from media studies and communication, sociology, cultural studies, sport and physical education, and management. With diverse viewpoints and a range of tactics, these studies examine evolving and emerging strategies for an American-influenced model of sport that has been shaped by the logic and presses of consumption culture.

This article provides an editorial introduction to the second of two special issues of American Behavioral Scientist on "Sport, Communication, and the Culture of Consumption." This second issue focuses on "Language and Identity" and brings together American, Canadian, and British scholars from communication, media studies, rhetoric, philosophy, sport, and cultural studies. The language of sport is featured in analyses of bullshit in mediated sports discourse, in themes of justice as articulated in a blogosphere defense of doping in cycling, and rhetorical strategies that surround our thinking of poker as sport. The intersection of consumption with social and cultural formations of identity is examined in studies of the post-Michael Jordan NBA's "ghettocentric logic," in racialized commentary by commentators in broadcasts of NCAA men's and women's Final Four basketball games, and the role that media play in formations of hegemonic masculinities for high school youth.

Using sport as a lens to illuminate a path for broader cultural analysis, this essay argues for a three-pronged theoretical approach to the critique of commodity value in contemporary narratives. Three elements of an analytic strategy for the critique of commodity aesthetics are considered. First, the concept of communicative dirt posed by Leach (1976) and Hartley (1984) is considered in the service of creating commodity value from the cultural logic of sport. Second, the merits of a reader-oriented approach as used in literary criticism, reliant on understandings of Fish's (1976) notion of interpretive community and the variant ways that texts work to control reading, are considered as complementary to understanding the workings of communicative dirt. Third, the value of ethical criticism in providing an overarching frame for deconstructing the manufacture of commodity value, including strategies for using communicative dirt to construct readers and control the reading act, is assessed. A case study of a television commercial banned from the 2005 Super Bowl broadcast illustrates the tripartite approach. In conclusion, the study argues for the applicability of this dirty theory of narrative ethics to postmodern concerns with media in increasingly commodified contemporary culture.
