On the basis of a new heuristic model of anti-Semitism, researchers are able to distinguish between new & old aspects of anti-Semitic attitudes. The results of two studies suggest that anti-Semitism in Germany contains very different aspects & the data fit the new theoretical model. Both traditional aspects, like "manifest anti-Semitism," as well as new forms of anti-Semitic attitudes, like "latent anti-Semitism," "rejection of responsibility for Jews," "anti-Israeli attitudes," & "anti-Zionism," were found. Furthermore, we identified various anti-Semitic attitudes with different predictive elements. Individuals with extreme anti-Semitic attitudes differ significantly from those without anti-Semitic attitudes with regard to the extent of authoritarianism, readiness for violence, approval of the repetition of National Socialism, & political orientation. The comparison between the two general concepts, authoritarianism & social dominance orientation, demonstrated that authoritarianism has greater utility in explaining separate aspects of old & new anti-Semitic attitudes. "Against the background of a series of serious right-wing extremist and anti-Semitic incidents in Germany in 2000, we constructed a new heuristic model with three components to describe new aspects of anti-Semitism based on: 1) traditional anti-Semitic prejudices, 2) communicative latency of anti-Semitism, and 3) refusal or acceptance of responsibility for what happened in the past to the Jewish people. The model was tested in some field studies (N=2130 youngsters in Ger-many) using a standardized questionnaire. Path analyses show a 3-dimensional structure of anti-Semitism (manifest, latent, and 'no responsibility toward Jews') and the data fit the theoretical model. New aspects of anti-Semitic attitudes reflect the public avoidance of anti-Semitic statements and refusal to discuss Germany's fault, behavior, and responsibility for the Jewish people. These new aspects of anti-Semitic attitudes are also linked to a general hostility toward foreigners. It is possible to differentiate between groups of individuals with various anti-Semitic attitudes. The new aspects of anti-Semitic attitudes are concerned with present debates about German national pride among German subpopulations and about the end of 'getting over history' The 'new' anti-Semitism in Germany may be considered as a social construction of German subpopulations designed to repress their own conceptions of unpleasant 'German' problems." "Vor dem Hintergrund einer Reihe ernst zu nehmender rechtsextremistischer und antisemitischer Übergriffe in Deutschland während des Jahres 2000 entwickelten wir ein neues heuristisches Drei-Komponenten-Modell zur Beschreibung von Antisemitismus: Ein Aspekt a. beruht auf traditionellen antisemitischen Vorurteilen, ein weiterer b. auf der Kommunikationslatenz des Antisemitismus und c. auf der Zurückweisung oder der Akzeptanz von Verantwortung gegenüber den Juden. Mittels eines standardisierten Fragebogens wurde das Modell in unterschiedlichen Feldstudien (N=2130 Jugendliche in Deutschland) getestet. Die 3-dimensionale Struktur des Antisemitismus (manifester AS, latenter AS und 'keine Verantwortung gegenüber den Juden') wurde in Pfadanalysen gezeigt und die Daten entsprachen dem theoretischen Modell. Neue Aspekte antisemitischer Einstellungen spiegeln die öffentliche Vermeidung antisemitischer Statements und eine Ablehnung früherer Diskussionen über deutsche Schuld, Verhalten und Verantwortung gegenüber den Juden wider.
