The development of more flexible payment systems in the public services has been a major objective of the British government since 1979 This increased flexibility has been observed to have three major elements: (1) a decline m the influence of national collective bargaining in pay determination; (2) a shift to pay systems which are more contingent on local circumstances, and, (3) the growth of more variability of compensation in the pay system, such as performance-related pay. The government's approach has been to encourage public sector pay practices to become more similar to those in the private sector. This article reviews the changes in pay determination methods in the British public services since 1979, and it assesses the degree to which public service pay practices are converging with the private sector It concludes that, despite evidence of significant changes, major constraints continue to inhibit the direct transfer of many private sector pay practices to the public services

Around the world countries are introducing nurse independent and supplementary prescribing in response to increased socioeconomic and political demands. The introduction of non-medical prescribing in Jersey has been challenging but worthwhile. Non-medical prescribing, as in other countries, is seen as a safe and effective method of delivering patient care that provides significant cost savings; however, non-medical prescribers' powers and roles differ across the countries that have taken up the practice. This article documents the States of Jersey's journey from commissioning and the implementation of non-medical prescribing, to now.

The Flying Start programme was launched by the Welsh Assembly Government in 2006/07 as a pilot with the aim 'to make a decisive difference to the life chances of children aged under 4 in the areas which it runs'. This 2010 report presents the findings of the interim evaluation with regards to: the effectiveness of the programme in establishing the conditions necessary for later improvements in life chances, and whether it did so in ways that offered good value for money.
