Turkey has leapt to international prominence as an economic and political powerhouse under its elected Muslim government, and is looked on by many as a model for other Muslim countries in the wake of the Arab Spring. In this book, Jenny White reveals how Turkish national identity and the meanings of Islam and secularism have undergone radical changes in today's Turkey, and asks whether the Turkish model should be viewed as a success story or a cautionary tale. During today's crisis in Turkey, victimhood authorises oppression,
oppressors see themselves as victims and the oppressed are not only the poor, but
educated middle classes. Citizen and state are imbricated in the same political
and discursive fields where people mobilise against one another, some moving up
and others down, creating unexpected landscapes of victimisation and oppression
that do not fit comfortably in literature that analyses 'politics from below'. How
do we conceptualise this in a way that respects people's understanding of their
coordinates in a complex landscape of power? This article interrogates some basic
assumptions of this literature, including the impact of the observer's position and
the oppression/resistance framework, replacing it with a model of politics as a
shared horizontal topography of action across a terrain of values.

This article applies insights from cultural anthropology to the study of politics, nationalism and Islam in Turkey, with particular focus on group formation and competitive networks. It develops a model for understanding political fragmentation and inter-group hostility.

AbstractBlood, sexual honor, and "Muslim-ness" are related discourses that in Turkey produce national subjects in the service of the state. The national narrative brands a subject's perception of self, attributes of the body, and everyday practices with highly resonant markers of belonging. The maintenance of a national identity requires continual vigilance against the threat of forgetting, losing the coherence of the narrative, and disappearing. I will examine the role of purity and boundaries in reproducing Turkish national identity, with particular focus on two key metaphors of threat: the missionary and the headscarf.

It is not Islam that is the biggest challenge facing Turkey today, but rather the rise … of an intolerant, extreme form of nationalism.
