Although political scientists have used spatial statistical models in their research for only about ten years, their use has quickly advanced in terms of both the breadth of substantive areas in which researchers apply them and the sophistication with which they specify and interpret them. The collection of articles in this special edition are indicative of both of these trends. They provide a strong set of examples of how scholars can bring theories about spatial relationships across units into all of the major subfields of the discipline.

What do we know about elections and how do we know it? The articles in this collection use creative strategies and cutting-edge methods to answer these and other important questions. ObjectiveWe propose and test a theory that media freedom determines the extent of economic voting in developing democracies.MethodsBuilding on extant work that suggests economic voting takes place in developing democracies much like it does in established democracies (Lewis‐Beck and Stegmaier, 2008), we test our theory using a new collection of aggregate data from elections in 22 developing democracies in AfricaResultsMedia freedom rather than political freedom may be a bigger determinant of economic voting in developing democracies. Moreover, the threshold of political development needed for economic voting is lower than previously suggested by the literature.ConclusionEconomic voting is alive and well in developing democracies—even those with relatively low levels of economic and political development.

"We received a wealth of useful feedback from instructors and students about the first two editions of The Fundamentals of Political Science Research. In response to feedback on the first edition, we substantially increased the number of end-of-chapter exercises in the second edition. While the response to this increase was positive, we sensed a demand for even more exercises and, in particular, more hands-on material for how to put the techniques that we discuss in the book into action. This workbook is our attempt to meet these demands. It is one of three workbooks, each written to help students to work with the materials covered in The Fundamentals of Political Science Research, Third Edition using a particular piece of statistical software. This workbook focuses on using the program Stata. Our expectation is that the modal user of this book will be using a relatively recent version of Stata on a computer that is running some version of the Windows operating system. We also have made an effort to accommodate users who are using some version of macOS or OS X. In this article, we bring together elements from the literatures on economic voting and spatial voting to gain theoretical leverage on the combined role of clarity of responsibility, party policy positions, and economic performance in elections. Building on evidence of voter knowledge, we develop a theory of spatial contagion effects to explain how factors drawn from both of these literatures combine to shape changes in support for political parties. We test this theory with a spatial autoregressive model of party competition in 23 nations from 1951 to 2005. As expected, we find evidence of strong spatial contagion effects in elections with low clarity of responsibility. Adapted from the source document.
