This article takes the novelist Colette, who bought a house outside Saint-Tropez in 1925, and examines moments and feelings from her time in that place. Inspired by Hewitt's approach, and by his example of 'the unique hold exerted by Marseille on the nation's imagination', it traces, through Colette, imaginative modes of inhabiting a space, seeing it as a psychic as much as material location, a repository of feelings. Colette's work invests a place with meaning through writing, so that it becomes an imaginary space, intimate, sensory, and consciously feminine. Since Colette's feminism resides most surely in her pursuit of pleasure, this place can be a house of feelings, about love, about present pleasures shaded by past experience, a space accessed through the senses. In this way, her house in Saint-Tropez appears as a space of speculation and exploratory relations, in which to think too about the lived and dreamed realities of other female lives.

Abstract: The Hollywood Reporter feature on Gianfranco Rosi's Fire at Sea (Fuocoammare, 2016) reads: "Where journalism leaves off, Fire at Sea begins". The director spent months living alone on Lampedusa looking for ways to film the current refugee tragedy in the Mediterranean. The poetic film that he made (and that won the Golden Bear at Berlin) is an indirect reckoning with its subject, and, I argue no less political for this. Referring to the work of Adriana Cavarero, Christina Sharpe, Anne Dufourmantelle and Judith Butler, this article explores the uses of recorded telephone calls and other transmitted voices and songs in the film. These calls and voices offer forms of appeal and aural, non-visual, but bodily, affective traces. The film emphasises the political importance of listening, and of attending to these calls and voices, envisaging a mesh of connectedness, of threads of human attachment.

An examination of Lucile Hadzihalilovic's film of 2004, Innocence, this article argues that childhood, child experience and its representation, offer prescient and urgent material for thinking about the public and the private, raising issues about identity and newness/the newborn, about influence and intrusion, about intimacy and enclosure, about growth and metamorphosis. The malleable, mutating substance of children's bodies, of their environs and of their imaginings, is seen to offer new insights into the relation between private and public and new reflections on that relation as fluid and overlapping. Examining childhood offers evidence about identification and enculturation, the construction and production of social identity, and the position of the self within a community. Engagement with the work of Jean-Luc Nancy allows questions about intrusion and étrangeté to be pursued in material and political terms.

The Arctic remains of great interest for extractive industry development, despite fluctuating mineral and hydrocarbon prices, and the technological and political challenges of accessing these resources. The articles in this special section explore the realities of living close to extractive industries in the Arctic; the expectations surrounding extractive projects; the nature of local and distributed benefits; and the extent to which local knowledge is incorporated into public debates. In this introduction, we consider how an 'extractivist' logic can stifle other ways for local communities to imagine the future, contrasting this with local perspectives based on sustainability and co-existence with nature. Where industrial activity takes place, local involvement in shaping an industry's 'social licence to operate' offers a counterbalance to an 'extractivist' imperative, by focusing more on equitable benefit sharing and protection of local livelihoods and the environment. We conclude that rights holders and others directly affected by industry operations can use their own knowledge to ensure that decisions are sensitive to longer-term sustainability risks, and that alternative development options are adequately considered. An empowered local civil society also has an important role in ensuring extractive industry operations are environmentally sound and compatible with existing local livelihoods.
