Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to explore and evoke an old educational concept called "study". This is learning which leads to love and love which leads to learning. It is a dynamic experience which engenders transformation whose telos is simultaneously endlessly knowable and unknowable. The paper argues that it unites humans with the world, the material world with the transcendent, speed with slowness and alignment with resistance, in a series of antinomic relationships which come together in the heart. Study, it is argued, should form the basis of true education and a truly sustainable relationship with the world.


Design/methodology/approach
The paper's approach is informed by the Eastern Orthodox Christian theology of ecology, particularly its complex and holistic concept of the heart and perceiving with the heart. It revels in the antinomies fostered by this tradition.


Findings
The paper's findings are inevitably provisional. They stress the need for beauty in educational practice and indicate that the form of study described may foster an individual sense of vocation, which can transform self and the world.


Originality/value
The paper hopes to contribute to a re-orientation in education, sustainability and ecology.

The report presents a quantitative analysis of Australian Research Council funded projects involving collaboration with European countries. Key findings are considered within the context of increasingly 'knowledge based' economies and the increasing globalisation of scientific research and development. This report identifies significant issues and makes recommendations which represent the preliminary stages of science and innovation policy development in Australia. Modern economies are based on knowledge and skills developed through the science and innovation system A high quality science and innovation system is crucial in maintaining and developing a strong and competitive national economy, social wellbeing and environmental sustainability. Economies world wide are continuing to grow and become more reliant on the consolidation of knowledge and skills. International collaboration is a key in developing and maintaining a strong science and innovation system In order to achieve a quality and competitive science and innovation system countries need to share and mutually build upon available skills and knowledge through international collaborative research and development. Australia accounts for only around two percent of the world's science and technology output, and so international engagement is imperative to gain access to resources and technology. Engagement through international collaborative research and development can take on many forms and bring many benefits for the science itself and indirectly to the community. Governments are key players in supporting the development of the science and innovation system. Through the creation and implementation of policies, frameworks and funding programs governments can actively promote and support the development of the science and innovation system and engagement at the international level. The ARC is an important agency funding ICRD The Australian Research Council is an important federally administered research and development funding agency. The ARC represents Australia's biggest single source of international research and development funding. Over 75% of its $5 billion 2006-7 research budget will likely be dedicated to projects involving international collaboration. European collaborative projects will likely attract 50% of the ARC's total budget. Baseline knowledge is prerequisite for better policy in the future Efforts to understand and optimise Australia's international science engagement is underdeveloped, although has been an area of increased investigation recently. In order to develop better policy and in turn enhance Australia's science and innovation system an understanding of the Australian federal governments approach to international science engagement and is needed in order to identify issues and work to remedy the deficiencies. This report considers quantitative findings from a policy perspective. This report presents a collation and analysis of data detailing European collaborative research and development projects which received funding from the ARC. Characteristics of the projects have been summarised and trends and patterns identified. The findings are then discussed within the broader context of the globalisation of R&D and Australian federal government science policy to arrive at some preliminary recommendations. The data has been provided by the ARC, and this report represents the first analysis of its type based on this particular data. Key Findings The data analysis of European collaborative research and development projects yielded the following key finding . • The most recent data shows a decline in the number of grants and funding for projects involving European collaboration. • The majority of collaborative projects are classified as 'informal' and occur within the discovery projects scheme • Projects and funding are concentrated in a small range of countries and research disciplines Recommendations 1. That the reasons for the decline in grants and funding for European collaborative R&D projects in 2005 should be determined and addressed accordingly. 2. That the ARC should reform and refine its application and approval process to further target and determine the nature of international collaborative projects. ARC funding schemes should be developed in respect of this to promote and realise the benefits of international collaborative projects 4. Although useful, concepts such as NRP's and the benefits associated with international collaboration should be carefully considered especially with respect to their assigned significance in the selection criteria 4. Australia should dedicate more to establishing and maintaining an understanding of both individual European countries and the European Unions', R&D characteristics, capacities and potentials in order to best realise collaborative opportunities. Increased investment and expansion in organisations like FEAST and the appointment of attaches in European are considered cost effective solutions.

IN_PRESS ; This work shows an example of the application of Bayesian dynamic linear models in fMRI analysis. Estimating the error variances of such a model, we are able to obtain samples from the posterior distribution of the signal-to-noise ratio for each voxel, which is used as a criterion for the detection of brain activity. The benefits of this approach are: (i) the reduced number of parameters, (ii) the model makes no assumptions about the stimulation paradigm, (iii) an interpretable model based approach, and (iv) flexibility. The performance of the proposed method is shown by simulations and further results are presented on the application of the model for the analysis of a real fMRI data set, in order to illustrate some practical issues and to compare with previously proposed techniques. peer-reviewed ; At time of writing, the policy of DNA profile retention for Constabularies within England and Wales is determined by the Association of Chief Police Officer's (ACPO) 2006 Retention Guidelines for Nominal Records on the Police National Computer (PNC), which was developed following the passing of the Criminal and Police Act 2001 and the Criminal Justice Act 2003. The former of these legislations ended the requirement for Constabularies to destroy DNA records relating to persons acquitted or who had their case discontinued, whilst the latter extended powers so as to permit the taking of DNA records without consent from any individual arrested for a recordable offence. These Retention Guidelines detail a governing principle that all records held on the PNC should be maintained until the person in question reaches 100 years of age, regardless of status of conviction, caution, acquittal, or No Further Action (NFA). As such, by 2010 there were over 5 million persons with profiles on the UK National DNA database, with approximately 1 million of these having no record of conviction or caution.

In the past 12 years several studies have screened lists of thousands of chemicals available in the in-dustrial chemical inventories of the European Union, the USA and Canada with the goal of identifying andprioritizing chemicals which are persistent (P), bioaccumulative (B) and toxic (T). Most studies haveselected chemicals based on whether their predicted P and B properties and their long-range transportpotential exceed guideline thresholds for evaluation of persistent organic pollutants (POPs). A major goalof this study was to review this recent literature on computer-based or'in silico'screening for POPs. Asecond goal was to review other approaches forfinding previously unidentified chemicals of concernincluding targeted and non-target analytical approaches that might use lists of suspect chemicalsdeveloped from'in silico'screening studies. Eight studies were reviewed along with several others whichexamined the screening process and its uncertainties. From these studies we assembled a list of 3421chemicals, after removing duplicates and substances already on the Stockholm Convention on POPs.About 52% of these were halogenated, while 48% consisted of a broad range of non-halogenated organics.This list was then further analysed by calculating an overall"POPs score"for transport and accumulationin the Arctic for each substance using predicted partition coefficients, overall persistence, transfer effi-ciency, and bioaccumulation factor. A shorter list of twenty-five substances was developed based on theirPOPs score ranking. These substances had not been previously analysed in environmental media butwere nevertheless on current or recent chemical inventories indicating significant commercial use.

Many organisations are encouraging their staff to integrate work and non‐work, but a qualitative study of young professionals found that many crave greater segregation rather than more integration. Most wished to build boundaries to separate the two and simplify a complex world. Where working practices render traditional boundaries of time and space ineffective, this population seems to create new idiosyncratic boundaries to segregate work from non‐work. These idiosyncratic boundaries depended on age, culture and life‐stage though for most of this population there was no appreciable gender difference in attitudes to segregating work and non‐work. Gender differences only became noticeable for parents. A matrix defining the dimensions to these boundaries is proposed that may advance understanding of how individuals separate their work and personal lives. In turn, this may facilitate the development of policies and practices to integrate work and non‐work that meet individual as well as organisational needs.
