Exports and small producers in Mexico's secondary cities
In: Raten-Amerika-Kenkyū: an international journal, Heft 13, S. 23-55
ISSN: 0285-3582
The rapid decline of Mexico's internal market has forced many small producers to seek entry into the export business. This study analyzes their successes and failures, the difficulties they face, and the procedures they have developed for overcoming such obstacles. The authors give special attention to the strategy of inter-firm networking to access the international market, and the strategy of contract assembly as maquiladoras for foreign firms. Based on field interviews of producers in Aguascalientes, San Luis Potosi and Leon, the study also reports the impact the small scale producers expect from the proposed Free Trade Agreement.
