Marion Steven and the Logie Collection
In: The Journal of New Zealand Studies, Issue NS32
ISSN: 2324-3740
Marion Kerr Steven (1912–1999), founder of the James Logie Memorial Collection at the University of Canterbury, has been a significant and yet elusive figure in the university's history. A recent oral history project in the Department of Classics has built up a vivid impression of Steven's character and personal influence on her students. Prior to this, Steven's travel diary from 30 November 1958 to 13 July 1959 was donated to the Logie Collection and transcribed in 2017. This article, resulting from research in relation to the transcription, situates Steven in context as a woman in the then male-dominated academic world, and explores her role in reshaping classics as a discipline at the University of Canterbury. The diary records her journeys to London, Rome, and various sites across Greece as she conducted research for teaching purposes, scouted out new objects for the Collection, and participated in meetings of academic organisations. While the period was perceived by many in the field as a time of crisis for classics, Steven appears to have instead seized the opportunity to extend the potential of the discipline.

What is the level of influence that may be exercised by income security organisations in facilitating employment outcomes?
In: International journal of disability management, Volume 9
ISSN: 1834-4887
The primary function of income security organisations is to administer personal injury claims in a commercially viable and cost effective manner, while supporting the receivers of benefits/claimants to achieve a meaningful and durable return to employment. Given the pressures of commercial success in a competitive market measured by effective cost minimisation, to what extent is the level of support offered to individuals claiming benefits impacted by an organisation's purpose to be profitable? The extent of influence exercised by income security organisations in administering claims and driving employment outcomes is limited by jurisdictional legislation and regulations. Furthermore, the requirements to meet compliance requirements can often be detrimental to the quality of management of claims, resulting in a highly administrated framework. This can restrict an organisations capacity to meet individual needs, especially in cases that are not seen as fitting the norm. Considering the conflicting demands imposed by commercial pressures and regulatory frameworks, what is the level of influence that may be exercised by these organisations in facilitating employment outcomes? Employers Mutual have maintained a leading position in the NSW Workers Compensation Scheme, achieving commercial targets, meeting legislative requirements and promoting excellence in employment outcomes through:
•Organisational vision – we help people get their lives back;•Focus on support and development of people as front line drivers of performance;•Role design – how we actually do our jobs;•Implementing organisation strategies and designing key support roles aligned to remunerative measures;•Strategic focus on early intervention to facilitate return to work;•Ensuring people receive the full extent of their entitlements, however, are not compensated to excess;•Service level agreements with employers/brokers with a key focus on return to work expectations;•Strong relationships with third party service providers; and•A structured framework that allows flexibility in decision making.

Scientists and Policy‐makers: Towards a New Partnership

There is an urgent need to link social science research with policy making to address many key issues confronting countries across the globe. Policy makers need the benefit of social science research which is relevant, timely, trans‐disciplinary, methodologically capable of capturing global and local trends, swift to respond to fundamental issues, and offering findings which are clearly articulated, effectively disseminated, and oriented to outcomes. For this a new partnership is needed between social scientists and policy makers. We can gain a clearer picture of the nature of this desired partnership by probing the dichotomy between the world of science and the world of policy making. The experience of UNESCO and its programme Management of Social Transformations provides some valuable lessons.
