The Qualitative Election Study of Britain uses focus groups to collect data on the views and concerns of British citizens before and after elections and referendums. This is a case study in how qualitative electoral data were generated by our open-ended vote choice question, and how those texts were handled, coded, and analyzed to produce our conclusions, specifically how narrative analysis was the analytic basis for the conclusions found in our article, "I Went with What I Always Do ...: A Qualitative Analysis of 'Cleggmania' and Vote Choice in the 2010 British General Election." After using grounded theory method (GTM) and discourse analysis, we applied narrative analysis to systematize and compare the structures of the stories people told. Narrative analysis allowed us to reveal a pattern in the data demonstrating different types of voters, including accounts that revealed that voters with a long-term partisan identification reported psychological obstacles to voting for a different party.

Abstract
This article details the novel structure developed to handle, harmonize and document big data for reuse and long-term preservation. 'The Longitudinal IntermediaPlus (2014–2016)' big data dataset is uniquely rich: it covers an array of German online media extendable to cross-media channels and user information. The metadata file for this dataset, and its documentation, were recently deposited as its own MySQL database called charmstana_sample_14-16.sql (https://data.gesis.org/sharing/#!Detail/10.7802/2030) (cs16) and is suitable for generating descriptive statistics. Analogous to the 'Data View' in spss, the charmstana_analysis (ca) contains the dataset's numerical values. Both the cs16 and ca MySQL files are needed to conduct analysis on the full database. The research challenge was to process large-scaled datasets into one longitudinal, big-data data source suitable for academic research, and according to fair principles. The authors review four methodological recommendations that can serve as a framework for solving big-data structuring challenges, using the harmonization software CharmStats.

This research replicates and expands upon the qualitative electoral research of Winters and Campbell by using data from focus groups conducted in Essex, England to coincide with three leadership debates during the 2010 British general election. The Qualitative Election Study of Britain (QES Britain) broadly replicated Winters and Campbell's research design but includes innovations in data collection to more accurately capture assessments. This innovation means the data coding are based entirely on the evaluations of the participants. In our analysis we innovate in the way we display each leader's unique evaluation structure. To capture the salience and direction of leadership assessments, we convey the dimensionality of popular perceptions for Brown, Cameron and Clegg using colour and scaling. Our results produce qualitatively informed evaluation structures for each party leader that contextualize quantitative survey findings. Although this case study is limited to a geographically specific group of participants, our results mirror the quantitative BES results. Such similarity in the qualitative and quantitative results increases our confidence that our results provide useful insights into the associations and evaluations ordinary people used in their assessments of the main political party leaders.

We use focus group transcripts from the innovative Qualitative Election Study of Britain dataset to provide insights into why 'Cleggmania' failed to translate into electoral success for the Liberal Democrats in 2010. Analyses conducted on participants' vote choice stories indicate the effect of 'Cleggmania' was limited to strengthening the resolve of wavering Liberal Democrats. Long-time Labour and Conservative supporters who leaned Liberal Democrat before the election found their latent party identification made voting for a different party psychologically uncomfortable. Qualitative electoral research can advance our understanding of people's voting calculus by analysing narratives for values, identity, utility maximizing, and constituency dynamics.

The Qualitative Election Study of Britain (qesb) is the first (and only) qualitative longitudinal dataset to investigate political attitudes and voting behaviour over multiple elections and referendums in the United Kingdom. During the 2015ukgeneral election over 90 voters participated in 23 focus groups across England, Scotland, and Wales before and after polling day. These participants represented a range of political party supporters and independent voters, age groups, and economic backgrounds. They discussed a range of political issues including their vote choice in the election, their impressions of the major party leaders, why they would consider voting (or never voting) for a political party, and their expectations for the country moving forward. Special focus groups were also held around the three leaders' debates. The 2015qesbalso brought back participants who had participated in the 2010qesbfocus groups and the 2014 Scottish referendum focus groups. The 2015qesbhas created a unique panel of participants whose political opinions can be tracked across multiple elections. The project also includes questions that were asked in prior election focus groups and has replicated, with some modifications, the research design of the previous wave of the study.
