Imperfection and Impartiality argues, from a liberal perspective, for a radical re-interpretation of existing ideas about social justice. This model cherishes plurality and tolerance, instead of uniformity and moral indifference.

This is an agenda-setting exploration of the relationship between green politics and liberal ideology. Ecological problems provide unique challenges for liberal democracies.

The consistency between Karl Popper's political theory & his philosophy is analyzed based on a comparison of his anti-utopianism in The Open Society and Its Enemies. Vol. I, Plato (London, 1986) & The Poverty of Historicism (London, 1960). The dependence of his model of the open society on his special understanding of deontological liberalism is discussed, with special attention to his weak rebuttal to the counterarguments of utopianists. In recent decades, environmental issues have increasingly been incorporated into liberal democratic thought and political practice. Environmentalism and ecologism have become fashionable, even respectable schools of political thought. This apparently successful integration of environmental movements, issues and ideas in mainstream politics raises the question of whether there is a future for what once was a counter-movement and counter-ideology. First published in 1999, this volume contributed to the debate on the European Union in furthering the study of environmental policy and, expressly, by introducing promising young scholars to the debate. The volume is based on a series of seminars for the Interdisciplinary Research Network on Environment and Safety (IRNES) with funding from the UK Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). These new scholars explore areas including post-decisional politics, sustainability and agricultural biotechnology regulation.
