This paper presents the outcomes of research on the quality of public space of town center, led in chosen medium-sized towns of Łódź region, using the authors' method of assessment. Method consists of three elements: graphic valorisation, checklist valorisation and surveys, each of them giving numerical results, which enables comparison of the quality of public space in different aspects. The final effect of the method is ranking of towns, which can be analysed applying adopted criteria. Research revealed that the most important criterion of the high quality of public space of town center is well planned and executed revitalisation program, which introduces positive changes in all aspects identified as factors of quality of public space, between them animation of new activities.

Rewitalizacja stref centralnych miast jest istotnym instrumentem służącym podnoszeniu ich żywotności oraz zapobieganiu odpływowi mieszkańców. Aby przyciągnąć nowych mieszkańców do centrum miasta, działania w zakresie rewitalizacji muszą zmierzać do poprawy jakości życia, w tym warunków zamieszkania. Łódź była jednym z pierwszych miast w Polsce, które opracowały Lokalny Program Rewitalizacji w 2004 r. i dzięki temu mogła ubiegać się o środki finansowe UE na rewitalizację. W centrum miasta zostały wyznaczone dwa pilotażowe obszary rewitalizacji, z czego w obszarze południowym zaplanowano i zrealizowano projekty Miasta z dofinansowaniem unijnym, inwestycje Towarzystwa Budownictwa Mieszkaniowego oraz prywatnych inwestorów, głównie w zakresie remontów, modernizacji i nowej zabudowy mieszkaniowo-usługowej.

It is easy to speak about partnership, but it is much more difficult to live it. Lately, partnership has become a strong element of our reality. The word partnership has become very fashionable and popular. It has many meanings and it includes various relationships, connections, networks and types of organisations. The idea of intersectoral partnership within the framework of which authorities representing units of local government, economic entities and third sector organisations cooperate to solve complex local and regional problems is winning many supporters. Partnerships are initiated by companies, nongovernmental organisations or public institutions and act at a local, regional, national or global level. Intersectoral cooperation rarely becomes an easy and quick solution to problems. Partnership undertakings require determination, perseverance and courage. Each party brings different experiences and skills thanks to which intersectoral co-operation can become sustainable, efficient and effective in a condition that it will be properly designed and managed. In Poland, favourable conditions for the idea of intersectoral partnership developed after 1989. There are various reasons for the creation and functioning of this form of cooperation resulting mainly from the development of a citizen society in the 1980s and 1990s and further social and political transformation. Increasing liabilities of the public finance sector resulting in searching for alternative financial resources and an implementation of patterns adopted in other European countries became further impulses for changes.

The attempt to make a comparative study of Lviv and Łódź in search of certain regularities seems at the first glimpse rather farfetched, because apparently there are rather few analogies between the city of Lviv with its long history and multifunctional tradition and the monofunctional, rather young, industrial city of Łódź. But deeper analysis shows that despite many differences in the course of the history of both cities, some common tendencies can be traced, such as dynamic demographic and spatial development in the second half of the 19th century based on introduction of railway transport, the building of socio-economic and spatial structures of these cities by multi-cultural local communities, and going through half-a-century period of centralized socialist economy after the Second World War. Lviv and Łódź regained political independence almost at the same time (1989 in Poland and 1991 in Ukraine) and entered the route of democratic development, undergoing political and socio-economic transformations during the last 20 years. As a result of these processes as well as the influence of globalization, today we can observe in Łódź and in Lviv similar problems and phenomena, influencing their spatial development and functional restructuring. ; Udostępnienie publikacji Wydawnictwa Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego finansowane w ramach projektu "Doskonałość naukowa kluczem do doskonałości kształcenia".
