Previous research has established that racial/ethnic residential inequalities in the United States are due to a combination of resource disadvantage and discrimination. This article builds upon past work by using a new dependent variable (census tract median housing value), examining the effects of wealth, and including interactions between race/ethnicity and resources. The authors find that the Black—White gap in neighborhood quality is explained by the combination of Blacks' relative disadvantage in resources and the smaller benefits they gain from having those resources. In contrast, Latinos who are not recent immigrants are similar to Whites in both neighborhood quality and their ability to translate resources into residential quality.

"Digital nomads are knowledge workers who actively seek a lifestyle of freedom, using technology to perform their work remotely, travelling far and wide, and moving as often as they like. They have left their local coffee shops behind and now proudly post their "office of the day" photos from exotic locales, but what do their lives really look like? This book takes readers into an expatriate digital nomad community in Bali, Indonesia and presents new manifestations of classic questions about community, creativity, and the role of place in the modern human ecosystem. It explains why digital nomads leave their creative class cities behind, arguing that creative class workers, though successful, often feel that their "world class cities" and desirable jobs are anything but paradise. This book follows nomads' work transitions into freelancing, entrepreneurship, and remote jobs. Then, it explains how digital nomads create a fluid but intimate place-based community abroad in the company of like-minded others. It shows why and how individuals blend in-person and online activity in their pursuit of community and freedom. This book provides insights into individuals' efforts to live lives and create work identities that balance freedom, community, and creative fulfilment in the digital age, and it provides insights into a larger cultural discourse about the future of cities, work, and community."

This study uses interview and focus group data to examine how residents perceive and cope with studentification, disorder, and neighbor conflict in a college town. First, we find that nonstudent residents perceive studentification as the cause of neighborhood decline, but mainly blame larger forces and local actors, such as the university, city officials, and local developers, rather than the students. Second, we find that one way that residents adapt to disorder is by using active strategies to defend their neighborhoods, but they believe this role has been forced upon them by the failure of social institutions to address the local problems. Third, given the limited effectiveness of social control efforts and given the structural barriers to fostering order, residents have come to adopt passive strategies that normalize disorder and allow them to avoid further conflict with neighbors.

Becoming a father is a major benchmark in adulthood. Good parenting means being engaged, nurturing, and helpful, goals that are often shattered for fathers in contact with the criminal justice system. The relationship between this contact and fathering disproportionately affects the lives of unmarried fathers and non-Whites. The authors use Fragile Families survey data to explore fathers' engagement with their children. They extend research on crime and fathering by examining the effects of a range of contacts on the father—child relationship, and examining racial-ethnic differences in such contacts' effects on father engagement. They provide clear evidence that non-Whites are less engaged with their children on average, as are booked or incarcerated fathers. The negative effect of incarceration on engagement is worse for Blacks than Whites and Latinos, and the effect of being booked is worse for Blacks than Whites. The findings have implications for efforts to reintegrate fathers after incarceration.

AbstractUsing 20 semistructured interviews with police officers from a rural sheriff's department, we present what we believe is the first in‐depth examination of U.S. rural officers' views on gun control. We find that officers possess complex views about gun control, reflecting their multiple identities as both gun‐oriented rural citizens and police who seek to control the situations they encounter at work. Specifically, we observed that rural police officers: (1) embrace a rural identity that implies support of gun rights over gun control; (2) report that police work experiences have caused them to embrace their police identity and to distance themselves from some gun‐related aspects of rural identity (e.g., they have lost interest in guns over time and have increasingly dissociated from gun‐enthusiast peers); and (3) have learned to incorporate aspects of both identities into their views on gun control, universally advocating for some gun control measures in the name of community safety, but rejecting others as part of rural ideological views about personal freedom. We discuss research and policy implications and suggest that policymakers must better appreciate the nuances and culture of rural places in order to gain rural citizens' and rural police officers' support for gun control legislation.

This study examines adjustment differences between in-state Black students who are familiar with rural and predominantly White environments versus out-of-state Black students who mainly come from segregated, Black neighborhoods and larger cities. Focus group discussions highlight the role of students' residential backgrounds, especially racial composition and rural status, in understanding their social adjustment and perceptions of divisions within the Black student population on campus. With regard to geographic divisions, students reported: 1) differences in their comfort levels in predominantly White environments; 2) perceptions of in-state Blacks "acting White" (out-of-state students equating urban residence of origin with authentic Blackness); and 3) perceptions of differences between the two groups in provincialism versus sophistication. We conclude that while race is often seen as unifying Black students at predominantly White colleges, students also have strong place identities that are tied to the racial composition and location of their home communities that serve to divide the Black student community. The study concludes by discussing the importance of Black students' home environments for shaping their social experiences at predominantly White institutions and suggests avenues for future research.
