The effects of transnational ties upon the emotional lives of second-generation Filipino Americans are studied. Second-generation Filipino students (N = 22) enrolled at the U of California, Davis, in 1995, were interviewed to determine the influence that family had upon their emotional well-being. Several findings are reported: participants perceived family as the most important part of being Filipino & generally referred to the Philippines as "home"; students experienced significant pressure from their parents to achieve high academic marks; some Filipina participants stated that their parents attempted to restrict their educational achievement in order to preserve control over female students' lives; many students delineated their relations with parents as strained; & several female participants contemplated suicide or developed eating disorders in response to family pressures. It is subsequently asserted that second-generation experience "emotional transnationalism," defined as the influence of transnational relations over immigrant population members' emotional lives. Recommendations for future research are also offered, eg, whether members of diasporic communities are also affected by emotional transnationalism. 50 References. J. W. Parker

ABSTRACTThis article focuses upon the decision‐making process in the household with regard to young women and factory employment in Java and Taiwan, and critically examines to what extent these processes reflect household strategies. While Javanese daughters may seek factory employment against parents' wishes, Taiwanese daughters may be obliged to submit to parental decisions and work for years in order to contribute income. The concept of 'household strategies', however, inadequately describes both situations, masking relations of power, resistance and inequality within the household. The assumptions underlying the concept of household strategies and their broader analytical implications are explored, leading to the conclusion that a more differentiated view of the household is needed, taking power relations and struggles between genders and generations into account.

This paper focuses on our four years of involvement with a feminist organization within academia that brought `Third World' women activists from a variety of fields as visitors to our US university campus. Based on our experiences as white, US-born feminist sociologists committed to political change, we analyze the challenges and contradictions that we confronted in the daily processes and activities of this organization. By exemplifying complex power dynamics, which often are unacknowledged and unarticulated, our case highlights the need for new theoretical perspectives that take into account power differences that exist along various axes - including axes of domination among women. Transnational processes, we argue, further complicate such power differentials. Serious analyses of the processes and outcomes that are recreated in transnational, international and local feminist development organizations constitute an important political step towards bridging existing gaps between feminist theory and practice.
