Homegrown hardship : the depiction of violence in T.C. Boyle's The Harder They Come
; Violence is arguably one of the great issues of the 21st century. In all parts of the world thousands of people are murdered, assaulted and suffer from the worst treats of mankind on a day to day basis. Given the pervasive nature of violence it should be to no ones surprise that politicians, scholars, artists and authors have concerned themselves with violence in every imaginable way. The aim of this diploma thesis is to look into the representation of violence in T.C. Boyles The Harder They Comeand thereupon draw conclusions about the treatment of violence in American culture. The basic premise of this thesis is that the respective book acts as a kaleidoscope from which the various and vast believes, values and attitudes a society collectively holds about violence can be discovered and studied in this case the American. The thesis itself is divided into three different chapters. While the first chapter deals with the interpretation of the vast incidents of violence as they are depicted in the book chapter two and three are designed to provide theoretical input upon the findings of chapter one. Upon these findings it will be argued that the potential of American culture to be violent stems mostly from legends and myths which are an essential part of American history. ; vorgelegt von Matthias Georg Wolf ; Zusammenfassung in Deutsch und Englisch ; Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz, Diplomarbeit, 2017 ; (VLID)2118039
