This editorial is part of the special issue 'Political Change and Civic Continuities in the Age of Revolutions'.

The central thesis of this book is that the political history of the Dutch state is closely intertwined with the control over the sea and the estuaries of the rivers Rhine and Meuse. This is of course not a very original thought, 'polderen' is generally seen as a second nature of Dutch politics, and the continuity in the structure of the polder districts over the centuries, and its impact on Dutch public administration is unprecedented in the western world.

In his rich book Plaatsen van beschaafd vertier (Places of civilised pleasure) Jan Hein Furnée displays in a creative and exemplary manner the culture of the elite in The Hague in the nineteenth century. With his book he set a new standard for local cultural-historical research. However the book offers little additional value as a comparative approach is missing. Moreover, by choosing elite and bourgeois sociability as a point of departure, the book offers no new insights into the changes in nineteenth-century political culture.In zijn rijke studie Plaatsen van beschaafd vertier legt Jan Hein Furnée op voorbeeldige en inventieve wijze de elitecultuur van het negentiende-eeuwse Den Haag bloot. Is Populism a Thing of the Past?Is populism a category that contributes to our understanding of politics and its history? A large number of books are dedicated to populism and new titles are published weekly. In this article the balance is drawn up by judging books with different scientific pretentions, but with two features in common. Inspired by a number of classical studies on populism they try to interpret the state of Dutch politics, and at the same time offer a reinterpretation of aspects of the recent and less recent Dutch past. On the basis of a review of these books one has to conclude that populism, unlike the classical 'isms' of the history of politics, appears to be too diffuse to be a useful category for an interpretation of the political development in the last decade, or more generally as a phase in the development of democratic political systems.Reviewed books:Baalen, Carla van, e.a.
