During March and April 1972 members of the Second Friendship Delegation of the Committee of Concerned Asian Scholars visited the People's Republic of China and met Fei Hsiao-t'ung, Wu Wen-tsao and Lin Yüeh-hwa, scholars well known in western sociological and anthropological circles, and who are at present affiliated to the Central National Minorities Institute, Peking. In October 1973 an article by Gene Cooper appeared in Current Anthropology, consisting of a transcript of Fei's remarks to the delegation, a summary of the ensuing discussion, and a translation of the reply written by Fei, Wu and Lin on 11 October 1972 in response to Cooper's sending them a draft copy of the interview report.

ABSTRACTAn existing aetated lagoon treating piggery waste was converted into an aerobic sequencing batch reactor (SBR). After the commissioning period, the SBR plant treated piggery wastewater containing BOD and suspended solids (SS) concentrations of 2881 mg/l and 1419 mg/1 respectively, producing an effluent having an average BOD and SS of 18.7 mg/1 and 12.3 mg/1 respectively. The volumetric loadings on the SBR and the process were similar. However, the SBR process operated at a lower mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) concentration and shorter sludge retention period. Although the capital and operating costs of the SBR are higher than for the aerated lagoon, the simplicity of operation, the high BOD and SS removal efficiency, and the small land requirement make this type of process an attractive treatment option, particularly in places where land supply is limited and expensive.

The rate and socio-economic factors associated with consanguineous matings among 4498 Saudi families living in Riyadh have been evaluated. The incidence of consanguinity in the urban Saudi population is unusually high, has been common among Saudi people during the past decades and has not changed significantly even among the younger generation. There is a statistically significant relationship between educational level and consanguinity. Similar association is observed between income level and consanguineous matings. The rate of consanguinity is significantly higher among men and women who are marrying for the first time.

This paper examines the demand for directors' and officers' liability insurance (D&O insurance) by Chinese listed companies where controlling-minority shareholder incentive conflicts are acute due to the concentrated and split ownership structure. We hypothesize and find evidence that the incidence of seeking D&O insurance is positively related to the extent of controlling-minority shareholder incentive conflicts - a finding not previously documented in the literature. Using an event study, we find that the announcements of D&O insurance decisions in firms that engage in earnings management, and/or are controlled by a local government (such firms tend to have stronger incentives to tunnel), seem to have a negative wealth effect. In addition, the incidence of the D&O insurance decision is positively related to the proportion of independent directors and several litigation risk proxies. Therefore, the breakthrough in corporate governance and judicial reforms has created non-negligible perceived securities litigation risks in China. © 2008 Elsevier B.V.
