Israel galt den Juden in der Diaspora lange Jahre als Bewahrer jüdischer Werte und jüdischer Identität. Mittlerweile aber ist das Konzept einer gemeinsamen jüdischen Identität auch innerhalb des jüdischen Staates gefährdet. Die Polarisierung zwischen der religiösen und säkularen jüdischen Jugend wächst; traditionelle zionistische Werte, die lange als gesellschaftstragend angesehen wurden, werden zunehmend in der öffentlichen und wissenschaftlichen Diskussion in Frage gestellt; in der Diaspora wird die Israel-zentrierte Ausrichtung des Judentums hinterfragt. Die Art der Bewältigung dieser Krise durch Israel und das Diaspora-Judentum wird weitreichende Auswirkungen auf die jüdische und israelische Gesellschaft und die Beziehungen zwischen den Juden in Israel und der Diaspora haben.
