Organic system of agricultural production is particularly important in the context of agriculture sustainability. Taking into consideration sustainability premises, agricultural sector should deliver environmental, social and economic profits. One of the most important form of agriculture in this context is organic production. In 2019, the European strategy of Green Deal underlined the need of further and faster development of organic farms in the EU. The purpose of the paper is establishing current tendencies, as well as perspectives of organic farming development, including its market environment in the EU. The accent was focused on Poland`s situation and experiences. The period of the analysis covered the years 2012-2020. The data used in the research came from national institution Agricultural and Food Quality Inspection, Statistics Poland reports and papers, as well as database of Eurostat. Indicator analysis methods were used and trends were established.
The results of the study revealed, that during the analyzed period, organic farming developed in the EU. The main statistics, such as the number of organic farms and organic agricultural land improved significantly. The current trends in individual European countries in the field of development of the organic management system indicate, that this segment of the agricultural market has different significance in individual countries, which may also result from local economic and market conditions. Based on the research results, it was stated, that organic farming development in the EU – in the nearest further – will be challenging, especially in the context of the european strategic purposes, presented in Green Deal documents.

Since the early 90s Twentieth century, the European Union introduces changes in the Common Agricultural Policy, which are reflected in the reforms taking into account the environmental requirements in agricultural production. Undertaken activities have led to the need to monitor the scale of impact of agricultural production on the environment and seek appropriate methods, measures and testing, allowing for synthetic evaluation of agricultural sustainability, including its internal organization (linking crop and livestock production) as well as the relationship with the environment. This article aims to determine the level of sustainability of individual farms and the factors that determine it based on FADN (Farm Accountancy Data Network).

Presently, the sustainable development of agriculture is the priority for nations, organizations and generally for the world. Different aspects are considered in the issue of sustainability of agriculture. In agriculture sustainability evaluation, holistic approach is needed, that determine the selection of different indicators and important farms` group for the assessment. Environmentally sustainable agriculture is the state, that should be characterized by proper farms' organization, as well as biodiversity conservation. Taking into account the need of sustainability, the its evaluation gaining the importance. The aim of the paper is to present the scope of progress in environmental agriculture sustainability in Poland. Using public statistics for 2005, 2007 and 2016 of Statistics Poland and data about areas with high nature value farmlands (HNVfs), the direction in which tends Polish agriculture was indicated, putting particular attention to agriculture production organization and biodiversity protection. There was used a set of indicators that enable to evaluate the analyzed phenomenon, based on uniform, national data and legal documents. Research results indicated that Poland has a great potential of valuable natural farming areas. Environmental development of agriculture is observed.

Growing environmental and climate problems are forcing the search for effective solutions to economic activity, including agriculture. The popularization of relevant production practices and techniques is of great importance in this regard. The direction of European agriculture is of particular importance for solving environmental and climate problems. For years, strategies or sustainable development programs have been implemented, which, despite initiating the desired direction of changes, are still insufficient in terms of perceived needs. In December 2019, the European Commission issued a communication on the European Green Deal strategy, which was intended to launch further international action to achieve ambitious climate and environmental targets. The aim of the paper is to present the main issues related to the implementation of the European Green Deal strategy, including agriculture, and to outline the challenges facing it. The study used a review of literature and legal acts. The results of the study indicated the appropriateness of seeking further economic solutions consistent with the European Green Deal strategy. The goals included in the European Green Deal are very ambitious and will require a complex, multi-threaded approach to agricultural policy and a change in the attitude of farmers, i.e., greater consideration of non-production aspects of their activity, in particular in the field of environmental protection. At the same time, the European Green Deal should be assessed in a much broader sense than in terms of environmental requirements. The holistic nature of this document makes it a step towards building a new economy that takes into account the noneconomic consequences of the actions taken. ; Narastające problemy środowiskowe oraz klimatyczne wymuszają poszukiwanie efektywnych rozwiązań w działalności gospodarczej, w tym także w rolnictwie. Duże znaczenie w tym zakresie przypisane jest popularyzacji odpowiednich praktyk i technik produkcyjnych. Kierunek rozwoju rolnictwa europejskiego ma szczególne znaczenie dla rozwiązania problemów środowiskowych i klimatycznych. Od lat realizowane są strategie czy też programy zrównoważonego rozwoju, które mimo zainicjowania pożądanego kierunku zmian w rolnictwie, nadal są niewystarczające względem dostrzeganych potrzeb. W grudniu 2019 r. Komisja Europejskiej wydała komunikat poświęcony strategii Europejskiego Zielonego Ładu, który miał zapoczątkować kolejne działania międzynarodowe w celu osiągniecia ambitnych celów klimatycznych i środowiskowych. Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie głównych kwestii związanych z wdrażaniem strategii Europejskiego Zielonego Ładu oraz wskazanie kluczowych wyzwań dla sektora rolnego. W badaniu posłużono się przeglądem literatury oraz aktów prawnych. Wyniki wskazały na zasadność poszukiwania kolejnych rozwiązań gospodarczych spójnych ze strategią Europejskiego Zielnego Ładu. Cele zawarte w Europejskim Zielonym Ładzie są bardzo ambitne i będą wymagały złożonego, wielowątkowego podejścia do polityki rolnej oraz zmiany nastawienia rolników, tj. większego uwzględnienia pozaprodukcyjnych aspektów prowadzonej działalności, w szczególności w zakresie ochrony środowiska. Jednocześnie Europejski Zielony Ład należy oceniać w znacznie szerszym zakresie niż tylko w kontekście wymogów środowiskowych. Holistyczny charakter tego dokumentu powoduje, że jest on krokiem w kierunku budowy nowej gospodarki uwzględniającej szerokie, również pozagospodarcze konsekwencje podejmowanych działań.

Constitutive feature of organic farming is to carry out sustainable agricultural activity in accordance with the requirements of the soil, plants and animals. The systematic increase in the potential of the organic farms in Poland should be considered as positive and desired direction of agriculture development, due to the numerous environmental, economic and social benefits, as well as compliance with the future model of agriculture, based on renewable resources and environmental friendly and social development of rural areas. The purpose of this article is to provide socio-economic structural changes in organic holdings between 2005 and 2010 against the background of individual agricultural holdings population.

The idea of sustainable development, extended at the end of 20th century, takes the form of a strategic concept in the field of socio-economic development in many countries and their regional groupings. It is also being promoted by international organizations, considering the United Nations and NGOs. The concept usually involves three aspects, namely environmental, economic and social, in formulating corresponding goals and ways of achieving them. The implementation of this concept is a huge challenge due to the nature of market mechanism. This concept also applies to agriculture, which is a complex system. Sustainable agriculture should be considered at the different levels of vertical order – in particular at the level of agricultural holdings (microeconomic level), state (macroeconomic level) and global (planetary level). The order determines the hierarchy of objectives for agriculture sustainable development and measures to achieve them. Economic objectives are the most important in the case of farms, while social goals should dominate at the state level. At the global level, environmental objectives are particularly significant, because of biosphere natural limits. Defining socially rational solutions require holistic approach to agriculture sustainable development. This applies both horizontal analysis (different aspects, different purposes, different activities), as well as vertical considerations (taking into account microeconomic, macroeconomic and planetary level). The aim of paper is to present the significance of the holistic approach in the implementation of sustainable development principles at different agriculture levels – farm, sector, global. ; Idea zrównoważonego rozwoju, upowszechniona pod koniec XX wieku, przyjmuje postać koncepcji strategicznej w zakresie rozwoju społeczno-gospodarczego w wielu krajach i ich ugrupowaniach regionalnych. Jest ona także promowana przez organizacje międzynarodowe, na czele z ONZ. Koncepcja ta zazwyczaj obejmuje trzy aspekty, a mianowicie środowiskowy, ekonomiczny i społeczny, formułując odpowiadające im cele i sposoby ich osiągania. Wdrożenie tej koncepcji stanowi ogromne wyzwanie ze względu na specyfikę mechanizmu rynkowego. Koncepcja ta odnosi się również do rolnictwa, które stanowi złożony system. Zrównoważenie rolnictwa należy rozpatrywać na różnych poziomach układu pionowego – w szczególności na poziomie gospodarstw rolnych (poziom mikroekonomiczny), na poziomie państw (poziom makroekonomiczny) i na poziomie globalnym (poziom planetarny). Układ ten determinuje hierarchię celów zrównoważonego rozwoju rolnictwa oraz działania służące ich osiągnięciu. Cele ekonomiczne są nadrzędne w przypadku podmiotów gospodarczych, zaś cele społeczne powinny dominować na poziomie kraju. Na poziomie globalnym za najistotniejsze należy uznać cele środowiskowe, ze względu na naturalne granice biosfery. Znajdywanie racjonalnych społecznie rozwiązań wymaga holistycznego ujęcia zrównoważonego rozwoju rolnictwa. Dotyczy to zarówno zakresu poziomego (różnych aspektów, różnych celów, różnych działań), jak i układu wertykalnego (uwzględniania różnych poziomów: mikro- i makroekonomicznego, planetarnego). Celem artykułu jest uzasadnienie znaczenia zasady holizmu w zrównoważonym rozwoju rolnictwa na poziomie gospodarstwa rolnego (mikro), sektora rolnego (makro) i globalnym (planetarnym).

Abstract: Agricultural holdings have a very important role for the sustainable socio-economic development. Contemporary, the farms` activity is mainly determined by the market mechanism. Market imposes rules on agricultural holdings` functioning, on both the type and the scale of agricultural activities, agricultural production mode, as well as the sale conditions. The market mechanism forces the agricultural holdings` orientation on the economic objective achievement, aside from the agricultural production externalities. Those externalities are not the market transaction subject and are not a part of farmers` economic account. Agricultural production externalities, however, are the subject of increasing society` interests. Those interests particularly relate to natural environment protection and food supply. Referring to the above, there is a challenge to meet the requirements of a market, as well society. In order to meet the various agricultural holdings` challenges, there is a need to take action leading to micro- and macroeconomic criterion convergence of agricultural production. This is the fundamental principle of the sustainable development concept, which includes agriculture and agricultural holdings – the basic economic unit of this sector. Meeting these challenges requires taking into account the political factor to eliminate adverse effects of economic activity. The purpose of the article is to indicate the main challenges of agricultural holdings, determinants and measures of their sustainable development ; Gospodarstwa rolne pełnią bardzo ważną rolę w zrównoważonym rozwoju społecznogospodarczym. Współcześnie działalność gospodarstw rolnych jest głównie determinowana przez mechanizm rynkowy. Rynek określa zasady funkcjonowania gospodarstw rolnych, dotyczące zarówno rodzaju i skali podjętej działalności rolnej, sposobu produkcji rolnej, jak i warunków jej sprzedaży. Mechanizm rynku wymusza orientację gospodarstw rolnych na realizację celów ekonomicznych, abstrahując od efektów zewnętrznych produkcji rolnej. Efekty zewnętrzne produkcji rolnej nie są przedmiotem transakcji rynkowych i jak dotąd nie znajdują odzwierciedlenia w rachunku ekonomicznym rolnika. Efekty zewnętrzne produkcji rolnej są jednak przedmiotem coraz większego zainteresowania społeczeństwa. Zainteresowania te odnoszą się chociażby do ochrony środowiska przyrodniczego oraz walorów zdrowotnych dostarczanej żywności. W związku z tym, pojawia się wyzwanie sprostania wymogom zarówno tym o charakterze rynkowym, jak i społecznym. Wychodząc naprzeciw różnym wyzwaniom gospodarstw rolnych zachodzi potrzeba podejmowania działań zmierzających do harmonizowania kryterium mikro- i makroekonomicznego procesu produkcji rolnej. To fundamentalna podstawa koncepcji zrównoważonego rozwoju, która obejmuje także rolnictwo, w tym gospodarstwa rolne – podstawowe jednostki gospodarcze tego sektora. Sprostanie tym wyzwaniom wymaga uwzględniania także czynnika politycznego, by korygował on niepożądane skutki działalności gospodarczej. Celem artykułu będzie przedstawienie głównych wyzwań gospodarstw rolnych, uwarunkowań oraz działań prowadzących do ich zrównoważonego rozwoju.
