While China's central government has adopted remote sensing technology in land inspection since 2000, little empirical research has been done on its effect. This study aims to measure the effect of satellite imagery-based land inspection (SIBI) on illegal farmland conversion. The data used in this study were collected for the period from 1997 to 2010 at the province-level. The econometrics approach for panel data model was used in this research. The results showed that SIBI has a deterrent effect of approximately 2.42 ha for every increase of 1% in proportion to the area of prefecture-level regions inspected in a province-level region. The results also indicate land inspections with RS (Remote Sensing) technology saved approximately 11,880 ha farmland from illegal conversion during 2000–2010 with an estimated contribution of reducing illegal farmland conversion by nearly 11%. Furthermore, the governance structure change for land inspection has also contributed to deterring illegal farmland conversion. The deterrent effects due to land inspection by the Supervisor of State Land (SSL) are about 7332 ha during 2008–2010 with an estimated contribution of reducing illegal farmland conversion by nearly 33%. In conclusion, although SIBI has strengthened China's central capacity to uncover illegal farmland conversion and weakened local governments' abilities to hide illegal farmland conversion, it has limited impact on illegal farmland conversion since it is just a technical tool. Improvements in the land inspection governance structure have also helped to deter illegal farmland conversion.

Along with the globally increasing concern for environmental sustainability, improving urban industrial land use efficiency (UILUE) is critically important for China&rsquo ; s development trajectory. However, the existent studies on UILUE in China are mainly conducted at the provincial level, which significantly undermines their value for tailoring practical policy formulations for lower-level governments. To fill this gap, this paper aims to investigate the spatial and temporal pattern of UILUE in China at the prefectural level, examining the underpinning influential factors for the period 2000&ndash ; 2014. Employing the means of spatial autocorrelation and regression, it is found that UILUE in China has improved significantly over the past decade in general but is also accompanied by significant spatial variations. UILUE is positively related to the agglomeration of industries, labour, capital, and technology, in which technology has fundamental effects upon the other factors. It is suggested to policy makers that government policy interventions should be placed predominantly upon technology regulation, i.e., setting admittance criterion for foreign direct investment (FDI), and industrial investment. For future studies, consistent efforts ought to be exerted to examine UILUE at and even under the prefectural level to achieve better understanding among academics and policy practitioners.

Food system planning is important to achieve the goal of "zero hunger" in the UN's 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (UN, 2016). However, discussion about comprehensive planning for food security is scarce and little is known about the situation in Chinese cities. To narrow this gap, this study collected and analyzed four medium-term plans and two annual plans for the "vegetable basket project" in Nanjing, China. This study examines the strategies for urban food security in Nanjing to shed light on how the city developed a comprehensive approach to food system planning over the past three decades. The evolution of incremental food system planning in Nanjing provides valuable lessons for other cities facing food security challenges and shortages of financial resources. Reducing food insecurity is an ongoing challenge for the city governments in the Global South and comprehensive planning is a useful tool for addressing the challenge of urban food insecurity.
