Survivors of deliberate self-harm attempt in the military milieu: An exploratory study of psychiatric morbidity and psychosocial correlates
BACKGROUND: Deliberate self-harm (DSH) is common in modern society. A million people worldwide die from suicide each year, leading to a large toll on human resources and economy. Research has revealed DSH as an important indicator of eventual suicide worldwide. The present study focused on DSH attempters among Armed Forces personnel and family members with the aim of identifying modifiable factors to provide recommendations for primary prevention in the military milieu. METHODS: Hundred cases of survivors of DSH were evaluated in a case–control study using psychiatry assessment instruments (the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview, Pierce Suicide Intent Scale, Hamilton's Depression and Anxiety Scales and presumptive life event scale) to assess psychiatric morbidity and psychosocial correlates. The findings were compared with those of 100 healthy matched controls. The data were analysed using SPSS software. RESULT: The majority of DSH survivors (98%) had concurrent psychiatric morbidity, major depressive disorder (23%) being the commonest diagnosis followed by psychotic disorder and alcohol use disorder. Presence of relationship problems (69%) and financial difficulties (19%) were significant triggering factors in our study. Many DSH attempters had voiced suicidal ideation (66%) before their act and had history of aggression or violence (76%) in the past. CONCLUSION: Our findings are discussed in relation with findings in the literature. Recommendations regarding awareness campaign, specific skill development programs and the need for early intervention in individuals with psychiatric morbidity have been proposed to prevent such behaviours.

Coherent Multispin Exchange Coupling in a Quantum-Dot Spin Chain ; Physical Review X
Heisenberg exchange coupling between neighboring electron spins in semiconductor quantum dots provides a powerful tool for quantum information processing and simulation. Although so far unrealized, extended Heisenberg spin chains can enable long-distance quantum information transfer and the generation of nonequilibrium quantum states. In this work, we implement simultaneous, coherent exchange coupling between all nearest-neighbor pairs of spins in a quadruple quantum dot. The main challenge in implementing simultaneous exchange couplings is the nonlinear and nonlocal dependence of the exchange couplings on gate voltages. Through a combination of electrostatic simulation and theoretical modeling, we show that this challenge arises primarily due to lateral shifts of the quantum dots during gate pulses. Building on this insight, we develop two models that can be used to predict the confinement gate voltages for a desired set of exchange couplings. Although the model parameters depend on the number of exchange couplings desired (suggesting that effects in addition to lateral wave-function shifts are important), the models are sufficient to enable simultaneous and independent control of all three exchange couplings in a quadruple quantum dot. We demonstrate two-, three-, and four-spin exchange oscillations, and our data agree with simulations. ; Defense Advanced Research Projects AgencyUnited States Department of DefenseDefense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) [D18AC00025]; Army Research Office [W911NF16-1-0260, W911NF-19-1-0167]; National Science FoundationNational Science Foundation (NSF) [DMR-1941673] ; This research was sponsored by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency under Grant No. D18AC00025, the Army Research Office under Grants No. W911NF16-1-0260 and No. W911NF-19-1-0167, and the National Science Foundation under Grant No. DMR-1941673. Prevalence of HIV in Blood Donors
In: Journal of Nepal Health Research Council, Band 6, Heft 2, S. 93-97
ISSN: 1999-6217
Background: Nepal is categorized as a country with 'concentrated' epidemic of HIV Nepal Red Cross Society, Blood Transfusion Service has implemented considerable efforts to supply the safe blood and blood products according to the increasing demand. A trend analysis might prove valuable to understand the outcome and appropriately plan for further improvements in providing safe blood supply. The study aimed to assess the trends of HIV seroprevalence over the six years in nationwide and in urbanized setting of Kathmandu Valley. Methods: This is a retrospective study conducted among Nepalese blood donors through the years 2001-2007. Serum samples were tested using third generation ELISA tests, strictly following the instructions of manufacturers. The donors' information was collected through the donor record register through the respective Blood Transfusion Services. Results: The overall seroprevalence of HIV among the total blood donors in nation wide and in Central Blood Transfusion Service (CBTS), Kathmandu through the six years of review (from 2001-2007) was 0.33% and 0.4% respectively. A significant decreasing trend in HIV seroprevalence was observed both in nationwide and in Central Blood Transfusion Service, Kathmandu (P< 0.001).Conclusion: The analysis of trends in HIV seroprevalence among blood donors through the year 2001- 2007 showed a significantly decreasing trend, probably due to the cumulative effect of increasing awareness of HIV and improved screening system for safe blood donation. However, an abrupt increase in demand of blood supply was associated with significant increase in seroprevalence in the year 2005/2006. IMPACT OF CANAL RESTRUCTURING ON AGRICULTURAL LAND USE IN 23 DOWN HAIDERGARH CANAL COMMAND SYSTEM, UTTAR PRADESH, INDIA
The 23 Down Haidergarh Canal command system of Uttar Pradesh is situated in Indo-Gangetic Plain of India. It has huge potential of crop productivity. The canal system was unlined; due to which a huge amount of water waste as seepage, which results, waterlogging and sodic land development. This leads reduction in the productivity of crop land. To overcome with this problem government started the restructuring/lining of canal in 23 Down Haidergarh canal command system. The present study was an attempt to find out the changes in agricultural land of rabi season because during rabi season canal is important source of irrigation in 23 Down Haidergarh canal command system. Remote sensing and GIS techniques were used to monitor the changes after the restructuring of canal system. The LISS-III data (Linear Imaging Self-Scanner) of Rabi season for the year 2011–12 and 2017–18 was used for mapping of agricultural land use changes in rabi season for 23 Down Haidergarh canal command system. This study is useful to find out the change in agricultural land after the restructuring of canal command system.
