Since the mid-2010s, China has experienced scores of cross-regional protests by claim-making groups, despite the Xi regime's tightening societal control. In this article, I examine this form of contention and differentiate three types of groups that make claims for rulemaking, rule-enforcement, and political reform. Then, I compare state responses to each type by focusing on three specific groups: veterans, investors, and leftist students. Instead of crushing all attempts at cross-regional mobilization, the regime has at times made concessions. It has been slow to resort to outright repression, especially when protesters have merely demanded policy change or enforcement. Although this repertoire of contention appears in only some of China's many protests, it is becoming more widespread and in some cases impacts government policy. (J Contemp China/GIGA)

Existing studies have portrayed a lack of broad-based solidarity as a major hurdle to sustained social mobilization. Examining Chinese veterans, this article contends that intragroup fragmentation within a social group can actually help sustain activism when in contention with authorities. This is achieved through a mechanism of "selective identification": when subgroups make demands, they identify with better-off counterparts, while distancing themselves from veterans who are more disadvantaged. Through this, each successful gain achieved by one subgroup generates and legitimizes claims by other subgroups. Thus, intragroup divisions have not disempowered claimants but have been used as leverage against the government when making demands. This mechanism poses a dilemma for the government: a unified policy response to veteran groups agitating for better conditions is not accepted by groups that believe they deserve more, whereas a differentiated policy creates grievances among those who receive less. Both types of grievances can help mobilize and sustain collective action, even though veterans' activism has declined in recent years because of a more repressive overall environment. (China J/GIGA)

With the gradual deepening of the development of high-quality urban transformation, the "Danwei Compound" urban space production method constitutes the basis of Chinese current urban spatial transformation. The transformation plan of the original danwei compound "stock" to promote the healthy development of urban society has become the focus of research. First, with the help of Lefebvre's space production theory, combined with the spatial transformation characteristics of its own structural form experienced by the Chinese urban danwei compound, the space production is divided into three stages, namely, the diversity-orderly type average space of the danwei compound system period, dispersed type abstract space of the commercial enclosed community period, and the integrated differential space of a livable community undergoing regeneration and transformation. At each stage, the government, market, and residents have different influences on time-space production. Secondly, using Hefei's typical danwei compound as the research carrier, according to the space ternary dialectics, a multi-level analysis of "representations of space-representational space-spatial practice" is carried out on the production mechanism, and the logic of different types of spaces in different periods are described. Among them, the representations of space of the change of the danwei compound are the interrelationship of multiple governance subjects in different periods, such as changes in the implementation degree of governance strategies, the degree of residents' community governance participation, residents' satisfaction with community governance, etc. The representational space is the residents' community perception and interpersonal relationship at different transition stages, Interpersonal trust, and other social relations' changes. Spatial practice is manifested in changes in the support of public service facilities, public space, per capita living area, building quality, architectural style, and illegal building area. Finally, the three-dimensional space dialectical coupling coordination degree model is used to analyze and compare the representations of space of typical settlements in the three stages and the coupling characteristics of the representational space and the practice of space. On this basis, we provide innovative ideas and put forward relevant measures and suggestions for the regeneration, transformation, and development of livable areas.

A data broker sells market segmentations to a producer with private cost who sells a product to a unit mass of consumers. This paper characterizes the revenue-maximizing mechanisms for the data broker. Every optimal mechanism induces quasi-perfect price discrimination. All the consumers with values above a cost-dependent cutoff buy by paying their values while the rest of consumers do not buy. The characterization implies that market outcomes remain unchanged even if the data broker becomes more powerful—either by gaining the ability to sell access to consumers or by becoming a retailer who purchases the product and sells to the consumers exclusively. According to the author, one of the Peking regime's chief pre-occupations since the bloody crackdown at Tiananmen Square in June 1989 has been combating the perceived efforts of outside forces to encourage a "peaceful evolution" from communism to capitalism in mainland China. He examines the changes in mainland society and the measures Peking has adopted in its campaign against "peaceful evolution" which is part of its attempt to regain the control and legitimacy it lost as a result of Tiananmen incident.
